At a two hour drive from La Fortuna we visit the Tenorio volcano national park. After some hiking we will get to the Rio Celeste (blue river). The blue color you can see is the result of a chemical reaction between two merging rivers containing different volcanic minerals. (Foto tenideros) It’s a very rare phenomenon which creates a fairytale- like beauty. The hike itself is medium tough and takes about 4 hours. It will take you to a waterfall, a lookout point and the place where the river changes colors. (Foto waterfall)With the help of the guide there is a good possibility of seeing wildlife. After the hike we’ll have lunch and start our drive back to la Fortuna.

Professional Guide and Saw Lots of Animals
The guide is really nice and professional! Found many spiders, snakes and frogs. He also added several stops along the trip for us to swim and see many other animals. The guide took great and clear pictures by using our phone. So close to the animals. Did not see the blue color waterfall though, due to the weather.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your kind words! We're glad to hear you enjoyed the tour and that your guide helped make it such a memorable experience — from spotting incredible wildlife to capturing amazing photos. While it's a shame the weather didn’t allow for the blue waterfall view, we’re happy you still got to enjoy the other highlights. We hope to see you again for another adventure soon!

Great wildlife experience!
At first we weren't sure how this tour would be as the location is right off a main road, but it turned out to be great! Enthusiastic and informative guide. He went the extra mile to scout various wildlife out and be sure we all saw it. We even were treated to a rare sight, the sloth making his weekly descent from the tree - so awesome! I think we saw 5 sloths, two were moving around. Saw several types of birds. Overall a great tour! Well worth the money.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We’re glad the tour exceeded your expectations — even with the location being close to the main road. Our guides are passionate about sharing Costa Rica’s wildlife, and we’re thrilled you got to witness such a rare and special moment with the sloth’s descent! Seeing multiple sloths and birds in one tour is always a treat. We truly appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you back for another adventure soon!

How far in advance should I book Rio Celeste and Tenorio National Park Hike?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in La Fortuna can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in La Fortuna and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in La Fortuna?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
