What you get

    About this experience

Hiking in Spearfish Canyon, located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, is a truly unforgettable experience. With its towering limestone cliffs, lush vegetation, and cascading waterfalls, the canyon offers a mix of scenic beauty, accessibility, and serenity that sets it apart from other hiking destinations in the United States. Spearfish Canyon is one of the oldest natural canyons in North America—older than the Grand Canyon—and was carved by water over millions of years. Today, its vertical limestone cliffs rise up to 1,200 feet, surrounding hikers with dramatic, enclosed scenery that creates a sense of awe at every turn. Because of its narrow shape and elevation, the canyon has a unique cool, moist microclimate. This supports an unusually diverse range of plant life—over 1,200 species, including mosses, orchids, ferns, and wildflowers. In fall, the canyon bursts into brilliant hues of red, orange, and gold, rivaling famous leaf-peeping destinations.

    Best of the old west

This was the third trip we made with this company during our week in South Dakota. Spearfish Canyon is full of natural beauty and we had an excellent guide in Rose, first for some great sites in the town of Spearfish, then a leisurely drive, taking in the best o scenery with stops for short hikes and outstanding photo ops. The second part of our day was in Deadwood, to experience both true and Hollywood fiction about its Old West heroes. Rose gave us plenty of options in Deadwood for museums, tours, dining, free outdoor shows and shopping. An amazing afternoon.

Response from the operator: Thanks so much for joining us for not one, not two, but three trips! We are always happy to have familiar faces return and join us again and again. We can’t wait to have you back for even more tours in the future!

    2023 Trip to South Dakota

Rapid City has many hotels to choose from depending on ones taste and required amenities. Convenient location for visits to the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave and so much more. My wife and I went to see the Buffalo roundup, Black Hills, Jewel Cave and other attractions in the area. A great experience and recommend this area of the Country to those who like to see areas that have not changed much and are still clean and wide open.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad you and your wife enjoyed exploring the Black Hills and nearby attractions. It’s wonderful to hear you appreciated the wide-open spaces, natural beauty, and history of the area. We hope to welcome you back for more adventures in this special part of the country!

Denny the tour guide was fantastic. He possessed a vast wealth of knowledge about the Black Hills and spoke without any notes. He was very personable.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review. Denny definitely is a wealth of information! He loves his job and the Black Hills. I am happy you enjoyed your tour with him!

    Worth every penny!

Mickey (hope I’m spelling it right) was awesome. She loves this place and it’s apparent. She does her best to make sure we love it too! We appreciate the personal attention she gave us to make sure we enjoyed our time here. She even gave us some pointers about our trip for tomorrow to Rapid City that we’ll be taking on our own! Thank you so much for making our anniversary special!

Response from the operator: Thank you for your review. Mickey is one of guides that comes back every year. She has an amazing knowledge of the Black Hills area. She takes pride in the little things.

Incredible Black Hills and Badlands Experience!

My 10 and 12-year-old boys and I took our first trip to the Black Hills and Badlands in August 2022. We couldn't be happier with the experience Black Hills Adventure Tours provided. Carrie was so helpful in planning our trip, including giving advice on our road trip into South Dakota and worthwhile sites to see along the way in and out. We had a blast with our guide, Jamie. He was very knowledgeable and seemed to be as excited as we were to be exploring the beautiful area. He really helped to tweak and tailor the experience over our 3 days so it really was a perfect experience for us. Thanks so much! Nick

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your review! It was such a pleasure working with you ! I hope to see you again!

Private Spearfish Canyon Hike: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rapid City.

How much does Private Spearfish Canyon Hike cost?

    +

Prices start at $366 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rapid City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Spearfish Canyon Hike take?

    +

Plan for about 7.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rapid City is not rushed.

Is Private Spearfish Canyon Hike worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 56 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in Rapid City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Spearfish Canyon Hike?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Private Spearfish Canyon Hike suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private Spearfish Canyon Hike?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rapid City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rapid City and add a light layer if any part of the 7.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Spearfish Canyon Hike start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rapid City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rapid City?

    +

Rapid City is the base for Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse tours, Badlands National Park loops, Custer State Park wildlife drives and Black Hills cave visits. On Outty we rank every Rapid City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mount Rushmore and Black Hills Tour with Two Meals and a Music Variety Show, Bus Tour of Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, PREMIER PRIVATE Tour: Mt Rushmore, CrazyHorse & Custer State Park. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rapid City?

    +

May to September, with Sturgis crowding early August. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rapid City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
