    1. Museum of Geology

"What the mind does not know, the eye cannot see", is especially true of the Badlands. Here is where the veil of mystery will be lifted from the Badlands and its secrets revealed. The museum is closed on Sunday and Federal Holidays.

    2. Badlands National Park

The Badlands are as large and diverse as they are legendary. Fortunately this is a private tour, and you are free to determine how you spend your time there. Here is what we recommend: 1) Travel to the ghost town of Scenic, SD and the remote Sheep Mountain Table area. This is an area that few get to see and, you are ready to experience and understand; 2) Journey the Badlands Scenic Byway and stop at the park visitor center and several overlooks and trails.

    3. Wall Drug

Wall Drug is a classic American Roadside Attraction! It is a monument to the free enterprise system. You should see it just to restore your faith in entrepreneurs and how things can be done right. Oh yes, and you can eat and buy souvenirs there too.

    4. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

This is a National Historic Site about the Cold War and the missile fields that existed here. These sites have limited days and hours of operation. We can visit the preserved missile silo and visitor center when open or spend more time in the Badlands or somewhere else. The choice is yours.

Awesome trip with an awesome guide!

We did a private tour to the badlands and also saw a museum with dinosaurs fossils and an old military silo that held nuclear bombs. We saw a ton of wildlife in the badlands and the rock formations and colors were gorgeous! The drive and viewpoint stops in the badlands made the whole trip worth it. Our guide Chris was awesome! Very friendly and accommodating. Let us choose our schedule and route. Very flexible and nice.

Response from the operator: Jeremy, Thanks for spending the day with me as we explored the wonders of the Badlands. Travel well, Chris

    Spectacular, Educational, Fun

John Esposti was our (husband and I) tour guide for Badlands Sunbeams & Moonbeams and he is extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and customer focused. GeoFunTrek is a family operated tour business and they are very proud of the service they provide, rightly so. It was impressive because we had to cancel in 2025 and John was very accommodating so in 2026 there was no doubt who we were going to book with. It was a fun day and being a local we learned from John!

Response from the operator: Florence & John, Thanks for the time we spent together and the wonderful review. The guests, their receptivity and willingness to share make my days special too. Keep traveling, John

    Fun in the Badlands

Chris picked us up and we spent the rest of the day seeing and learning about the Badlands and the wider area. Chris tuned into us early and tailored our time perfectly. We would recommend GeoFunTrek.com to all our friends.

Response from the operator: Tim, Thank you for spending the day with me in the Badlands. They are such an awesome place, and I am always amazed at what I get to see. Have fun on your travels, Chris

Badlands / Bear Country / Wall Drug

Chris was very knowledgeable about all of the sights he took us to visit. We really appreciated that he let us know that it was our tour and that we could stay as long or short as we wanted at the places we took us. He was very accommodating in working around the government shutdown. We were not able to visit a few places normally on the tour because of the shutdown but Chris made sure we had an amazing day.

Response from the operator: Thanks for taking the tour with me in these unusual times. Glad we were able to make the day work so well for your family. I had fun too. Thank you, Chris, Tour Guide GeoFunTrekTours Black Hills, SD

A fun day in Deadwood and Spearfish Canyon

John was a fantastic tour guide who showed great wealth of knowledge and patience with our family of 4. We have 2 preteens who learned a lot about science and history. He took us to see the beautiful Spearfish Canyon and then we toured the Lead gold mine which conducts research in neutrinos. We then went to Deadwood to watch h the shoot out reenactments and learn about the famous characters Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane, saw their burials sites at Mount Moriah cemetery. We did a walking tour with an actor dressed as Marshall Bullock. John dropped us off at convenient locations and took care of the parking and all the tickets for us, allowing us to enjoy the activities and events without having to deal with the planning and hassle. He even provided big umbrellas when it started to rain. We went to Tatanka museum to learn about the bison. It was a wonderful day of learning and fun!

Response from the operator: Melinda & family, Thank you for the review and for spending your vacation time with me. Take care, John

Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rapid City.

How much does Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts cost?

    +

Prices start at $425 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rapid City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rapid City is not rushed.

Is Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 29 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rapid City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts?

    +

Around 10 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rapid City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rapid City and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Tour of the Badlands with Local Experts start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rapid City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rapid City?

    +

Rapid City is the base for Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse tours, Badlands National Park loops, Custer State Park wildlife drives and Black Hills cave visits. On Outty we rank every Rapid City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mount Rushmore and Black Hills Tour with Two Meals and a Music Variety Show, Bus Tour of Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, PREMIER PRIVATE Tour: Mt Rushmore, CrazyHorse & Custer State Park. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rapid City?

    +

May to September, with Sturgis crowding early August. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rapid City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
