A Spiritually Enlightening Experience
This was by far one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. The entire Mayan community was extremely welcoming and the shaman had the most calming energy. The ceremony was about an hour / an hour and a half total. You are only in the hut for about 20 min., but it is pitch black and very warm. So, if you are afraid of small spaces/dark spaces then this is not for you. The entire ceremony is intended to cleanse your energy. You leave the hut feeing incredibly light and cleansed. Our tour guide, Maricela was an absolute delight. I cannot recommend this experience enough. Swimming in the cenotes in the moon light is heaven.

Unique experience
It was such an unique experience and a powerful ritual! When I return to Mexico I will repeat it for sure but I will choose the private option. The temazcalero was such a genuine, kind and knowledgeable person. All my respect to him! The entire ritual, the people from there, the dinner, the swimming in the cenote nearby all made this an unforgetable and one of a kind experience. It was a long trip from Playa to the forest and back, at least one hour one way! But we chose a group ritual and it is understandable. What I didn't like and it is not understandable is that they promote a small-group experience but we were 20 people inside and felt crowded! This is not a small group. There were too many people, some wanted to go out before the ritual finish and I felt a bit disturbed of that. So when you make the reservation keep in mind to remind them it is a small group ritual. I totally recommend this! P.S.: "If you have problems with heat, darkness or closed off spaces think twice though."

Unique experience
This was a very unique experience that will remember for a long time. It was one of those experiences wherein you make what you will of it. It is an honor to participate in such a powerful ritual. Make the most of it! Also, be aware of and honest about your own needs as far a heat, darkness, and closed off spaces are concerned.

This was a one-of-a-kind experience...

This was a one-of-a-kind experience. The communication with the tour company was good. Our guide was fantastic. She explained a lot about the ritual on the way to the site. They picked us up at our condo around 4:15 pm. It was about a 45 minute drive to the temazcal site in the jungle. We chose the small-group experience so there were two other people on our tour in addition to my two stepdaughters, ages 16 and 17, and myself. This is defininitely an authentic experience-not a touristy sample of the Maya ritual. The shaman's daughter, Ruby, performed the ceremony for us and did an amazing job explaining everything for us in English though the prayers and chants were in Spanish. I was a little nervous about how hot the temazcal would be and whether or not we would be able to stand it for the entire 90 minutes. It definitely was HOT, but you can lie down on the floor or lean against the wall for some relief. The ritual is broken into four doors . They open the entrance to the temazcal between each door which brings in some cooler air. After the temazcal we had some fresh fruit and juice and relaxed for a few minutes. We fell in love with the adorable little girl whose family lives at the temazcal site. I wasn't sure how my stepdaughters were going to react to the experience but they both absolutely loved it and seemed to get a lot out of it. We got dropped off at our condo around 9:00 pm. If you are in the Playa del Carmen area, I would 100 recommend this experience to anyone who's open to trying something new.
