An eye-opening window into one of Mumbai‘s most remarkable communities
I recently did the Dharavi walking tour with Kaki Tours, guided by Su and Sagar — both locals with deep roots in the community — and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Mumbai. What sets this tour apart is the authenticity that Su and Sagar bring to it. As locals, they offered insights that you simply cannot get from a guidebook or an outsider's perspective. Their knowledge was extensive, and they were generous in sharing it — answering every question thoughtfully and going beyond the surface to explain the real fabric of life in Dharavi. The highlight for me was learning about the remarkable entrepreneurial ecosystem that has flourished here. Far from being just a neighbourhood to pass through, Dharavi is a thriving hub of small industries, family-run workshops, and ingenious informal businesses — a self-sustaining economy that has organically grown over generations. Su and Sagar explained the layers of this ecosystem with clarity and genuine pride, which made the experience all the more enriching. I came away with a completely new understanding of Dharavi — not as it is often portrayed, but as a place of incredible resilience, ingenuity, and community spirit. A Fascinating Look Into the Real Dharavi
I had a truly fascinating and memorable tour of Dharavi with Su and Bharti. They met me just outside Third Wave Coffee and guided me safely into Dharavi, even helping me navigate the chaotic (and honestly intimidating) street crossings. Bharti, who is from Dharavi herself, brought an incredible level of insight and authenticity to the experience. She was clearly well-known in the community, and very kind--she would stop to chat with locals along the way and even handed out candies to children, which was lovely to see. Both Su and Bharti did an excellent job explaining the economic life of Dharavi, especially the various industries operating there and how many workers support families back in their home villages. I was particularly impressed by what I learned about the plastic recycling processes and the craftsmanship in the leather workshops and the garment manufacturing workshops. Seeing proud workers showcase their products added a real sense of dignity and pride to the experience that I hadn’t expected. There were also lighter, memorable moments—like encountering goats in a local park and having cheerful children wave as we passed. They were also thoughtful throughout, taking photos for me so I’d have great memories to look back on. At the end of the tour, I mentioned I wanted to take a local train back to Bandra. Su went above and beyond--walking me to the station, treating me to ice apple along the way, buying my ticket, and even staying on the platform with me. She let her own train pass just to make sure I got on mine safely. I couldn’t have asked for a more insightful, welcoming, and generous experience. Highly recommend.

The best tour company in Mumbai!
My husband was on business and I had three days in Mumbai and did three tours with Khaki Tours who were excellent. Essential Mumbai and Wake Up both with fabulous guide, Parvez Panthaky who was hugely knowledgeable and a great sense of humour and an excellent story teller. And DiscoverDharavi with Sultan, another excellent guide with his colleague ‘K’ who gave me a fascinating and humbling tour of a slum area. The organising was first class and I was picked up and dropped back to our hotel. Highly recommend this company.
