From here, we will proceed to visit the megalithic temple complex of Ħaġar Qim, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The complex is located on the southern edge of the island on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfa. These temples are among the most ancient religious sites on Earth and are described by the World Heritage Sites Committee as “unique architectural masterpieces” dating back to c. 3600–3200 BC; they are over 5000 years old, predating the pyramids of Egypt by approximately 1000 years! The site consists of a central building and the remains of at least two more structures. The large forecourt and the monumental façade of the central structure follow the pattern typical of Maltese prehistoric temples. Along the external wall, one may find some of the largest megaliths used in the building of these structures, such as a 5.2-meter-high stone and a huge megalith estimated to weigh close to 20 tonnes.

Weather permitting, you will also have the time and opportunity to visit the grotto and caves by taking one of the boat trips organised by several local providers and available at a small fee payable on location.

Like organising getting drunk in a brewery

On a recent trip to Malta we booked three trips with this company, mainly because we were met by their rep Yann on our first morning. We didn’t see another company. All did not go well, the first trip was to Mosta for a meal and to watch traditional dancing. The bus arrived to take us but was full. After the driver made some call it was arranged to take us by taxi. The taxi eventually arrived and we were told thar we would go back on the bus, however later in the evening we were advised that a different bus would take us and we were to watch out for when another group was leaving. We left with that group as told but the driver refused to take us and left. We had to phone the office and eventually that driver came back to get us. Obviously we had been added to his run and he was not best pleased and after all the other passengers had been dropped off he drove like a madman to our Hotel. At one point when a police car with blue lights on passed I think he thought he was going to be stopped and slowed down and put his seatbelt on. Next morning we were waiting for the bus to take us to Gozo and whilst waiting the lady from the desk came to say we were waiting in the wrong place and had probably missed it. As she was telling us the bus arrived and the trip to Gozo went ahead. We stopped for lunch as arranged but to be honest I would have rather found my own food. The restaurant staff were unfriendly and the food was poor. The guide on this trip seemed to be in a rush, constantly looking at her watch. Last trip, this time the bus actually couldn’t come to the hotel because of a marathon taking place. The guide arrived and he had a bad attitude straight away. Some passengers could not walk to the meeting point and were told to get their money back. We the walked to the bus with the rep telling us what a hero he was walking round and gathering all the passengers. Never a hint of an apology, I refuse to believe that they didn’t know about the marathon. The tour was ok but ended at lunch time in Marsaxlokk. There was a big market but we were given 45 minutes to return to the bus. This wasn’t enough time so we(and another passenger) opted to stay and find our own way back. The guide was quite rude and after taking our names hesitated as if waiting for something, if it was a tip he had a long wait because he wasn’t getting on off me. Going back to the passengers that couldn’t make the walk to the bus. I think they had a lucky escape because there was a lot of walking. Some passenger that were on the tour struggled. They should have been advised and should never have been sold this tour.

Wasn't bad if you don't have a car. I would have rather visited all these places by car. We did go back to the Grotto on our own later. Too many people and stops on the huge bus.

It was okay, we spent a long time waiting for the rest of our group to arrive before the tour started. As it was too windy, the boats did not run so we did not get to see the blue grotto or even the viewpoint advertised. The temples were fantastic but we only had tickets/time to see one of the temples at the complex.

Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Mellieha.

How much does Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $22 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Mellieha usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Mellieha is not rushed.

Is Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 51 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.8/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Mellieha, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour?

    +

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Mellieha can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Mellieha and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Prehistoric Temples, Limestone Heritage and Blue Grotto Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Mellieha within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Mellieha?

    +

On Outty we rank every Mellieha experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Private Tour Around Malta, GOZO & Blue Lagoon Jeep Sunset Safari (Comino cave tour), Gozo Full-Day Jeep Tour with Private Boat to Gozo & return. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Mellieha?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Mellieha?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
