What you'll see and do
Dwejra Bay
Dwejra, with its dramatic coastal formations and sea spilling over the rocks, is a magical attraction. Here you can swim in the spectacular deep sea of the bay, in the calm shallows of the inland sea or in the foamy waters around the Blue Hole – one of Gozo’s top dive-sites. Dwejra is also home of the Fungus Rock or, as it is locally known, “Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral”, General’s Rock. It is so called in remembrance of the Italian General who centuries ago fell to his death while supervising quarrying in the area. History tells us that a special plant believed to have medicinal and healing properties used to grow on Fungus Rock and because of this the Rock used to be heavily guarded during the era of the Knights of Malta. Anyone caught stealing the crop was sentenced to death or to a life rowing the Knights’ galleys. The crop was picked and brought to the mainland using a primitive system of baskets and pulleys.

Xwejni Salt Pans
On the north coast of Gozo, just past Qbajjar Bay west of Marsalforn, the coast is characterised by a chequerboard of rock-cut saltpans protruding into the sea. These 350-year-old salt pans, which stretch about 3km along the coast, are more than just scenic. They are part of the centuries-old Gozitan tradition of Sea-Salt production that has been passed down within certain families for many generations. During the summer months, locals can still be seen scraping up the crystals of salt. Once collected, the salt is stored and processed in the caves that have been carved into the coastal rock.

Ramla Bay
This is Gozo’s, and arguably Malta’s, best beach. A wide stretch of red sand, it is often referred to locally as “Ramla il-Ħamra” – the Red Sandy Beach! Ramla is a wonderful place to swim, snorkel and chill out in the sun. The area around the beach is wonderfully undeveloped, although there are a couple of cafes and a stall set back from the beach. The sand dunes are protected and the valley leading down to the bay is green and fertile. The terraced walls built by the farmers give the valley an appearance of a quilt when viewed from surrounding high ground. There is myth and history here too. Roman remains lie beneath the sands and Ramla Bay is reached from ix-Xagħra, on one of the hills overlooking the valley, or from the village of in-Nadur.

Ghasri
Ghasri Valley, or Wied il-Ghasri is a breathtaking, narrow creek that seems right out of a postcard. Ghasri Valley’s narrow cove is approximately 300 metres long with a winding inlet and rugged, impressive high cliffs on both sides and about 100 steps down.

Inland Sea
The Inland Sea, sometimes called Qawra in Maltese and also known as Dwejra, is a lagoon of seawater on the island of Gozo linked to the Mediterranean Sea through an opening formed by a narrow natural arch. It was probably formed where a geological fault in the limestone had created a sea cave and the roof then collapsed.

Xlendi Beach, Cliff and Caves
Ix-Xlendi Bay is a popular swimming, snorkelling and diving spot. There is a small sandy beach leading into shallow waters perfect for young and old, while for the more adventurous it is deslightful to swim and snorkel in deeper water off the long stretch of rocks bordering the beach. Because of its reef formations, ix-Xlendi is an ideal diving site, even for beginners. This is also a typical Gozitan fishing village and well-served with good restaurants, bars and hotels.

There were both positives and negatives: Positives: 1) Our guide was wonderful. He was thoughtful, kind, knowledgeable and attentive. 2) We got to see so much of the island of Gozo; both the villages and coastline. Everything was beautiful. 3) The boat ride at the grotto was gorgeous. The water was exquisite and it only cost five euro per person to go, which was a bargain. 4) Getting picked up and dropped off by a van near our Air B&B was convenient. Negatives: 1) We only drove the quads on Gozo’s roads. There was zero off-roading. 2) It was stressful driving at high speeds on the narrow, local roads. At times, our group of nine got split, because the riders in the middle of the group had to yield to oncoming traffic. It was concerning when we got separated from the group twice, especially when there were forks in the roads. The quads were loud, so honking the horn to get our guide’s attention didn’t work. 3) There was only one guide who led at the front. It would have been better to have two guides: one at the front and one at the rear for safety reasons. I read on prior reviews that there were two guides, so I was surprised when we only had one. 4) The speedometer on my quad didn’t work. My legs were burning from the exhaust coming from the quad. I should have worn pants. I had to wrap my left leg with a small towel to stop my leg from burning. It was extremely uncomfortable. My daughter experienced the same problem on her quad. 5) My quad died suddenly in the middle of an intersection while I was making a turn. It took a couple of minutes to get it started again. My husband and I then switched quads and it stopped unexpectedly twice with him too. The group got temporarily separated and it was difficult to let our guide know what had happened. It was concerning. 6) The lunch was not that good. Everyone in the restaurant (there were a few groups), ate the croissant, potatoes and dessert, but the meat was questionable and most people didn’t touch it. Overall it would have been more enjoyable to have less driving and a few more stops for picture opportunities and to learn about local history.

Fun way to see Gozo
Fun way to see Gozo with a good food break and swim spot in the afternoon! The quad bikes were easy to ride but word of advice, if you get a choice between a black one or a red one, take the red one. The black quad bikes are really hot around the exhaust and your calf will feel uncomfortable.

Great day of quad biking round Gozo. Lunch was great, if a little early, and would have liked one or two more photo stops instead of stopping at the crafts shop but that’s just personal preference!
