About this experience

This full-day tour of the World Heritage Sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum begins with a pick-up in Naples and a transfer by bus to the ruins of Pompeii. There will be a tour assistant on the bus during this part of the excursion. On arriving in Pompeii you’ll explore the ruins for around 2 hours. Discover the traditions and daily life of ancient Pompeii inhabitants. You’ll see the large theater, the necropolis, the thermal baths, and some of the amazing houses that were owned by the richest residents. Enjoy an included light lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, head to Herculaneum where you’ll have the chance to explore the ruins on your own. It’s possible to observe the daily life of the population here even more detailed than in Pompeii, as the mud and volcanic debris that covered the city preserved the structures and artifacts of Herculaneum.

At the time of the dramatic eruption, Pompeii counted about 11.000 inhabitants, while Herculaneum had a population of some 5.000 people. A number of emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas in these cities. One day, in 79 AD, several meters of ashes buried the whole area in a matter of few hours. Centuries later, in 1748, under the Bourbons government, excavation works started. The discovery was greeted with enthusiasm as it added great wealth to the kingdom and inspired the neoclassicism movement in Europe. Nowadays, the ruins of Pompeii are amongst the most visited archaeological sites in the world, while Herculaneum is renewed for its Villa dei Papiri containing a library of over 1800 papyruses. Visit of the excavations (approx 2 hrs) and if time permits also of a coral and cameos factory to admire the production procedure carried on by expert artisans

Excellent day trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum

A very well-organised and enjoyable day from Naples. Visiting both Pompeii and Herculaneum in the same trip was a fantastic experience, as the two sites complement each other perfectly and give a fascinating insight into Roman life. The tour was well paced, the guide was knowledgeable, engaging and clear, and everything ran smoothly throughout the day. We particularly appreciated the explanations and historical context, which made the ruins much more meaningful than simply visiting them on our own. Lunch and transportation were well organised, making the whole experience easy and stress-free. A full day, but absolutely worth it. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Naples who wants to experience both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your detailed and wonderful review. We’re delighted to hear that you had such an enjoyable and well-organised day visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum. We’re especially pleased that you appreciated the guide’s explanations and historical context, and that they helped bring the ancient sites to life. It’s also great to know that the transportation and lunch arrangements made your day comfortable and stress-free. Thank you for your strong recommendation. We hope to welcome you again on another tour in the future.

A cheat. Not recomendable at all.

The tour was too slow. First of all, they changed our time. Later we understood why. From one group in English and other in Spanish, they made just one. The explanations from guides were too slow, and they repeated all twice, in Spanish and in English. This is a torture under this sun and heat. It was a moment I decided to go by myself and it was the best idea. Maria, the old lady in Ercolano, missed many points. My family stayed with her and they missed the best parts. I could see more things because I did it by myself. Also, it was a french family that had nothing in french. I had to help them with the translation. At the end they went also by theirselves. A shame. I will not recommend at all this tour.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely regret that the organization and pace of the tour did not meet your expectations. We understand your concerns regarding the multilingual group, the heat and the guided visits. We will review these points with our team, as our goal is always to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for every guest.

Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Naples.

How much does Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch cost?

+

Prices start at $100 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Naples usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch take?

+

Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Naples is not rushed.

Is Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.4/5 across 596 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Naples, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch?

+

Around 209 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Naples can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Naples and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Pompeii & Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples with Lunch start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Naples within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Naples?

+

On Outty we rank every Naples experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Private Amalfi Coast Tour from Sorrento/Naples/Salerno, Caserta Royal Palace & Gardens Small Group Tour with Shuttle, Naples Pizza and Tiramisu Cooking Class. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Naples?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Naples?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
