Elegant houses and elaborate villas lined the paved streets. Tourists, townspeople and slaves bustled in and out of small factories and artisans’ shops, taverns and cafes, and brothels and bathhouses. People gathered in the 20,000-seat arena and lounged in the open-air squares and marketplaces. On the eve of that fateful eruption in 79 A.D., scholars estimate that there were about 12,000 people living in Pompeii and almost as many in the surrounding region.

The tour guide and experience was great. The shuttle driver was almost 20 minutes late picking us back up at Pompeii and it was raining hard.

Just ok. Not that it was bad but somewhat disappointing. I’m not sure what would have made it more interesting but for me, it just missed the mark so to speak. Oh well.
