Awesome fishing with a local guide
Awesome opportunity to get out and fish with a local who knows the waters. I’ve never fished from a kayak before, let alone in the ocean, so cool! We’re eating good this week.

Horror Show
My wife booked this Kayak fishing trip with BoomKanani for my 63rd birthday during a trip to Maui Their web page is really sweet. (Clearly someone in the family has IT experience). They proclaim to be a small family run business in a sea (Pun Intended) of greedy, faceless, corporate evil doers. Unlike the big corporate tour groups they espouse private whale watching, snorkeling and kayak fishing trips with local guides who know everything Maui. There were multiple RED FLAGS after booking this trip, but once you are in, there is no way out. No way to obtain a refund, No one to hear your cries for help….you simply have to grin and bear it. Allow me to elaborate further: Initially, our start time was set at 7am. This was moved up to 5:15am (Pitch dark). No big deal, we planned ahead and brought our head lamps. The meet-up at Marker 14, was later changed to Marker 14.5 behind a gray truck. Again, in itself, no big deal. Turns out that there were more than a few Gray Tundras out at 5:15 in the morning, but in the end, we got lucky albeit on the second try. On arrival, No introductions, not even a handshake or “Hello, my name is XYZ and I’ll be your guide today”. (J Serody), I discovered the guides name only after I went on their site to request a refund and discovered he is the owner of this horror show. No safety briefing. No fishing license. No snack. No water. No access to the water/snacks we brought. After about 4-5 hours in the kayak you toilet where you might expect (Not a surprise…just saying). NO PRIVATE GUIDE. The “Guide” brought “Friends” along on our “Private” kayak fishing adventure. Again, not as big a deal, except that one of them was a chain smoker. Perhaps private means something different on the islands? Shortly after we arrived the “guide” barked orders at us about how the kayaks were quite expensive and we needed to follow him into the tight channel closely at risk of hitting coral and damaging equipment. Again all of this in pitch darkness. This entire outfit is a MAJOR SCAM. Top speed on these paddle kayaks is about 4-5 mph. You typically need to troll about 7-10 mph to attract Pellagic (Mahi Mahi being the target here) even with live bait. It is highly unlikely that you will catch anything! On the upside, you will get an expensive work-out trying. As a small family business owner myself, I would offer up some advice to J Serody or anyone else for which these tunes sound familiar. Take it or don’t. It is free? 1. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, FIND SOMETHING YOU ARE GOOD AT. (You are simply NOT a good fishing guide. At the absolute least you are NOT a people person). Consider perhaps doing IT. Your web site is among the best I have seen. This way you do not need to interact with human beings and you can instead fish by yourself. In the end, you will be a much happier person for it. 2. At a bare minimum….consider learning to introduce yourself, preferably in friendly manner whatever you decide to do besides being a fishing guide. 3. I honestly wish you well.

As an angler from the mainland, you may have caught these types of fish before but not like this!
What an amazing experience! I reached out the guide to book a last minute trip with a very good friend of mine. The guide, responded later that evening to confirm availability, favorable weather forecast and where to meet in the morning... The next morning, he loaded the kayaks and we were on our way out to sea in the dark. We navigated around some shallow reefs as not to damage the reef or the pedal drive kayaks. The next thing you know we are hunting pre-dawn baits including ballyhoo and flying fish to use as live bait. As dawn approached we started jigging sabiki rigs for mackerel to also use as live bait. Once we had sufficient baits, our guide rigged a couple of rods so we could troll the live baits we caught earlier and we peddled off into beautiful deep blue water where we could see the Big Island in the distance as well as breaching whales. It took a little while but we managed to hook a beautiful Mahi Mahi. Now this is where things are truly different than your traditional fishing charter on a sport fishing boat. On those boats, the mate will hook the fish and you just reel in the fish. On this adventure, your guide is not on your kayak with you which means you get to hook the fish, you get to fight the fish, adjust the drag and you get to land the fish (the guide will help you with this but our fish was uncooperative so we managed to do it ourselves). Being inches from the ocean surface on a stable kayak with the possibility of hooking a marlin, wahoo, mahi or tuna is very exciting. The possibility of catching something amazing is the fuel to keep your legs pedaling for hours. Anyway, I wish I had more time on the island as I would do it again. I highly recommend this company and will do this again when I visit Maui.

We had the most magical experience fishing with La!!! My boyfriend is a T5 Paraplegic and La was excited to take us out on an adventure on such a short notice. A whale sang underneath us first thing, followed by catching different species of fish including my most favorite… the bluefin trevally! Ended the last couple of hours on a honey hole. 100 out of 10 experience. I’ve done a lot of fishing trips and you can’t beat the kayaking + fishing in Maui!

Caught an Ono!
This was the best fishing experience any nerdy angler could go for! Hands free kayak fishing with an experienced local guide has to be my favorite way to learn any new waters. Amazing all the way around on both days, we saw whales, turtles, and were catching fish, cruising on the west side in kayak! Highly recommend even if you don’t fish!

Why this scores 50
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Maui.
How much does Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina cost?
+
Prices start at $775 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Maui usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Maui is not rushed.
Is Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 50 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Maui, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Maui can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Maui and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Pelagic Kayak Fishing Charter Lahaina start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Maui within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Maui?
+
Maui's three signature days are the Hana road, the Haleakala summit sunrise and the Molokini snorkel sail, and all three are logistics problems as much as experiences. Sunrise summit entry is permit-controlled, Hana is a ten-hour driving day, and Molokini boats vary wildly in size. Our ranking rewards operators who handle permits and keep boat capacity low. On Outty we rank every Maui experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Molokini Crater + South Maui Coast Adventure from Kihei, Maui, Maui: VIP Private Road to Hana Tour with Pick Up, Road to Hana Adventure Maui Tour with Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Maui?
+
April to May and September to October. Whale season runs December to April. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Maui?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
