What you'll see and do
Nizwa Souq
Exploring the Nizwa Souq is one of the top things to do in Oman. It is one of the oldest markets in the country and you will find fruit, meat, sweets, pottery, souvenirs and antiques... There is a lot to discover as you stroll through in the middle of the locals. Below is my guide to help you plan your visit.
30 minutes here · Admission included
Nizwa Fort Oman
The fort in Nizwa dates from the 17th century, during the Al Ya’rubi dynasty, and was built on top of the ruins of a 9th-century castle. The massive structure has been nicely restored, with many rooms set up to look as they did when the fort was in use; you'll see interesting historic tidbits offered in various displays in many rooms. Be sure to check out the prisoner room and read about the wartime use for the local dates, which were turned into a deadly weapon in the form of a cauldron of boiling date syrup. The views from the central tower are spectacular and worth the climb.
60 minutes here · Admission not included
Al Hamra
This quirky museum is more open house than historical display. Three ladies accompany guests around their traditional house in the aged and crumbling village of Al Hamra. They demonstrate the culinary arts of juniper-oil production, Omani bread-making and coffee-bean grinding, and there's an opportunity for a photo shoot in traditional regional costume. Sitting cross-legged in the majlis (reception room), surrounded by photos of local sheikhs, sampling coffee and dates, and exchanging sign language with the ladies is an experience not to be missed.

We had a really good day from start to finish. Communication beforehand was good and the tour was well organised from start to finish. The van was new, comfortable and we appreciated the cold water available throughout the day. We liked that the tour covered important historical sites in Oman. Our guide, Mohammed Aldighaishi, made for a memorable day. He was friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. We really enjoyed the day and his efforts. Thank you
Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful feedback. We’re delighted to hear that you had such an enjoyable and well-organized experience. Mohammed Aldighaishi will be very happy to know his friendliness and enthusiasm made your day memorable. We truly appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you again for another unforgettable journey in Oman.

Best tour guide
Mohamed A. was our tour guide for the Friday Nizwa program. We haven’t met such a well-prepared guide in a long time. He shared a great deal of information with us and talked extensively about the country and the sights throughout the entire tour. He was attentive to the group and remained cheerful and positive the whole time. Thank you for this wonderful day – we highly recommend him to everyone!!
Response from the operator: We’re so happy to hear you had a wonderful day with Mohamed! Thank you for sharing your experience and for recommending him — he’ll be thrilled to hear your kind words.

A Fabulous Day trip from Muscat
I had the most amazing tour today with Muhammed Aldighaishi. There were just 3 of us on the tour, and his enthusiasm shon through from the moment he picked us up. He gave us full information on what the itinerary was. Our first stop was Nizwa Souq, seeing and tasting the different dates, and smelling Francansence. Nizwa Fort showing all the different rooms and views. Lunch in Nizwa was delicious, followed by Jabreen Castle and finally Bahla Fort A truelly memorable day

Actually for Fort and Grand Canyon
(We actually went on The Nizwa Fort + Grand Canyon Trip as the original trip did not meet the number of participants) This experience was very good and intuitive, our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, giving us plenty of time to explore (Thank you Mr. Abdul Hamid), we had our itinerary texted to us with what was required and what to expect, which was very useful. The experience itself was amazing, the grand canyon was a marvelous scene, and the main food and drinks were covered by our wonderful guide. Please be aware that although it is stated that the trip is around 10 hours, it is most likely going to last longer than this, the trip from muscat to the fort and then Nizwa is close to 4/5 hours itself, two ways means that it would be around 9/10 hours. Due to extra traffic on the way back meant it was a total of 13 hours to return to our hotel. Also be prepared for a bumpy ride and comfortable of high heights (for the canyon) Regardless of this, it was still worth the experience fully. With a public setting you are likely to meet other outgoing people. In addition - the team very helpful contacting via WhatsApp the night before with all the information needed and as mentioned our plans were changed, although there is a price difference I was not charged extra for the change.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review! We’re very happy to hear that you enjoyed the Nizwa Fort and Grand Canyon tour and that the experience was still memorable even after the itinerary change. Abdul Hamid will be delighted to know that his guidance, knowledge, and care helped make the day enjoyable. We also appreciate you highlighting the travel time and sharing helpful tips for future travelers — the distance from Muscat means it can be a long but very rewarding day, especially with the stunning views of the Grand Canyon and the history of Nizwa. Thank you as well for mentioning the communication with our team before the tour. We always try to make the process as smooth as possible for our guests. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you again on another adventure in Oman!

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Muscat.
How much does Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $90 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Muscat usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour take?
+
Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Muscat is not rushed.
Is Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 27 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Muscat, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 5. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 7-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour?
+
Around 9 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Muscat can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Muscat and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Nizwa and Oman's Historical Gems Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Muscat within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Muscat?
+
On Outty we rank every Muscat experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Half-Day Private Muscat City Tour - Top Landmarks in Just 4 Hours, Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole Group Full Day Tour, Daymaniyat Islands Snorkeling Sharing Trip. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Muscat?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Muscat?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
