    What you'll see and do

    1. Gio Tours - Day Tours

This tour starts when you leave the port of call and get into the Panamerican Highway. You get to the road to Monteverde. The descendants of the original Quakers that came here in the 50’s, decided to protect their paradise from massive tourism by not paving the roads that access the region. In a country and area where the pouring rains turn dust into mud in a blink, this defense worked for many years.

    2. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

You will see why as you arrive to the Cloud Forest. The area where you have the first contact with this magical sort of rainforest has 6 bridges in total. As you come out of this enchanting and enchanted forest you will travel to a lower area in Monteverde to enjoy the fun, the learning and the discovery of coffee, chocolate and sugar. What comes next is Don Juan Coffee Tour. After you finish this great tour you will be taken for a delicious healthy lunch as a part of the tour and then, back to the pier with smiles in your heart and face. You will be taken back to the pier by 3pm.

Full day shore excursion into the Cloud Forest (with a delicious lunch) from Puntarenas

We booked this shore excursion with Gio Tours through Trip Advisor / Viator to coincide with our cruise ship's day in port, as we particularly wanted to see Monteverde's Cloud Forest and based upon the reviews on this site. Despite a slight change to the itinerary (more on which below), we had a very enjoyable day and Charlie (our guide) and Christian (our bus driver) were both excellent. We had no problems finding our guide (and the mini-bus/coach) at the end of the cruise pier (in Puntarenas) and prior communication with Gio Tours (to organise port collection etc) was helpful and prompt. We were in a very small group (6), which made the explanation from Charlie of the flora and fauna along the trail (at Skywalk park) much easier. He gave is lots of information and the suspension bridges are impressive, if a little wobbly! As other guests have commented, the journey from the port to Monteverde is relatively long (about 1hr 45 mins) (and not all on paved roads - so be prepared for some bumps), but the Gio Tours mini-bus was very clean and the scenery impressive (particularly looking back down into the valleys once above the clouds), plus Charlie provided lots of commentary - so we enjoyed and saw as part of the overall experience. Unfortunately, the coffee tasting aspect of our shore excursion had to be cancelled (? due to fertiliser spreading at the coffee plantation), but Gio Tours substituted in a visit to a butterfly farm (Jardin de Mariposas at Monteverde), which I found interesting, but which Sarah chose to sit out (as she has a phobia). Nonetheless, she did get a personal tour of their insect collection (including some that could only be seen under UV light) - so an effort was made to ensure she got something from this part of the day. As an observation (for those going to see wildlife), we didn't see that much wildlife within the Skywalk (save butterflies, colourful insects and birds) (Charlie explaining that the animals prefer the quieter parts of Monteverde; note there are also several ziplines at the park) but the bus did stop when Charlie spotted some monkeys on the journey to Monteverde - allowing us all to take photos. Overall, we felt the tour was a great way to get a flavour for the natural beauty of Costa Rica, and we are now thinking of returning in the future (for a land tour).

Response from the operator: Dear ChrisfromNorthEastUK: Thank you very much for taking the time to write us a review! It is great to know that you had a good experience in our country despite the inconvenience, as the coffee tour, but we are glad to hear that you were offered an alternative tour for it. Also, it´s great to hear that Cristian and Charlie made this a rich experience for you. We will be sure to let them know. If you ever come back to Costa Rica again, don't hesitate to let us know. We would be pleased to show you every detail of this beautiful country! Best regards  GioTours

Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Puntarenas.

How much does Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion cost?

    +

Prices start at $174 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Puntarenas usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Puntarenas is not rushed.

Is Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 60 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.4/5 across 22 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Puntarenas, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion?

    +

Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Puntarenas can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Puntarenas and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Puntarenas within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Puntarenas?

    +

On Outty we rank every Puntarenas experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tortuga Island Tour with Costa Cat, Small Group Night Walking Tour in Monteverde, Half day surf and adventure in Montezuma. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Puntarenas?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Puntarenas?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
