4. Estacao do Oriente

   Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the station was inaugurated on May 19, 1998, as part of the celebrations marking the opening of the EXPO'98 world's exhibition. At the time of its opening, it was considered the largest intermodal station in Portugal, winning the Brunel Award in the category of large new construction projects. 5. Alfama

   The Alfama neighborhood is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus River. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma meaning "hot fountains" or "baths". It contains many important historical attractions as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants. 6. Castelo De Sao Jorge

   The São Jorge Castle Hill has been occupied by different civilizations, including the Fenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors, due to its strategic location. Since 1147, when Lisbon was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques, the São Jorge castle has served as a royal palace, military barracks, national archive, and now as a national monument and museum. 7. Miradouro Da Senhora Do Monte

   One of the highest viewpoints in Lisbon, from where you can get a panoramic overview of the city, is above the old neighborhoods of Mouraria and Graça with the main landmarks on the horizon. 8. Lisbon Cathedral

   This is the oldest church in the city. Built after the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147, the cathedral has survived many earthquakes and has been modified, renovated and restored several times. 9. Praca Martim Moniz

   According to the legend, Martim Moniz was a knight participating in the Siege of Lisbon during the Reconquest, led by King D. Afonso Henriques, and sacrificed himself at the castle door, preventing the defenders from fully closing it. This heroic fact allowed him to have his name given to one of the squares in downtown Lisbon, where a multitude of different world cultures can be found together. 10. Praca Da Figueira

    In the 16th century, this square did not exist, with most of its area occupied by the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos, the most important in Lisbon. After the great earthquake of 1755, which destroyed most of the city, the hospital was greatly damaged and was demolished around 1775. The large area previously occupied by the hospital was turned into an open market square, and in the late 19th century, a large covered market was built. This market existed until 1949, when it was demolished. Since then, the square has been an open space. 11. Praca Dom Pedro IV

    Officially named King Pedro the 4th square, Rossio translates as a large gathering space. It's the heart of the Baixa downtown area, surrounded by late 18th-century buildings from the city reconstruction plan issued by Marquês de Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. From here, you have access to walking streets towards the Riverside, through RUA Augusta and Praça do Comércio. 12. Praca do Comercio

    Commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of Paços da Ribeira (the Royal Ribeira Palace) until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodeled as part of the rebuilding plan of Marquês de Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. It is actually still one of the biggest city squares in Europe. 13. Rua Augusta

    The main pedestrian boulevard of Lisbon's downtown connects Rossio Square to Praça do Comércio. Closer to the Riverside, you can see the colossal triumphal Arco da RUA Augusta, built in the 19th century to celebrate the reconstruction of the city after the 1755 earthquake. 14. Praca Dos Restauradores

    Surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings, this square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal, december 1st. 1640, after sixty years of Spanish domination. The obelisk in the middle of the square, from 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War after 1640. From here begins Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's main central boulevard with large sidewalks decorated by the portuguese "calçada", a traditional art still done by hand piece by piece with light and dark stone cubes. 15. Marques Do Pombal

    Sebastião José de carvalho e Melo, was the state secretary of King D. José I at the time of the 1755 earthquake. From many other things, he was the master planner of the Lisbon downtown reconstruction plan. The actual statue, from the 20th century shows the acknoledgement of the city to his work. 16. Parque Eduardo VII

    A public park with an area of 26 hectares near Avenida da Liberdade and Marquês de Pombal Square. Its name pays homage to King Edward VII from the United Kingdom who visited Portugal in 1902, to strengthen the relations between the two countries. 17. Bairro Alto

    One of the historic neighborhoods of Lisbon that started with the economic growth of the city after the 16th century The need to expand due to population growth and commercial development in Lisbon led to the construction of a dense residential and commercial area that still keeps its traditional character these days. Closer to Bairro Alto, the Chiado area connects to the downtown, becoming a trendy art and fashion business district. 18. Basilica da Estrela

    Ordered to be built by Queen Maria I of Portugal as the fulfillment of a vow, the Basilica is not only a product of the Queen's particularly fervent devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus but remains the most important architectural endeavor of her reign. The huge church has a giant dome, is located on a hill in what was at the time the western part of Lisbon, and can be viewed from far away. The style is similar to that of the Mafra National Palace, late baroque and neoclassical, with twin bell towers in front of statues of saints and allegoric figures. 19. Ponte 25 de Abril

    The main passage that reunites the south with the center of Portugal. Finished in 1966, it shares the project concept with the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge and is one of the most popular and photographed monuments in Lisbon. 20. Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei

    The best view of Lisbon is from the south side of the Tagus River. With more than 100 meters of height and finished in 1959, this unique landmark was built to fulfill a vow from the Portuguese episcopate to keep the country in peace during World War II. 21. Jeronimos Monastery

23. Padrao Dos Descobrimentos
