    What you'll see and do

    1. As soon as your cruise ship docks at Le Verdon port, our hosts will be waiting at the pier to assist you in boarding a comfortable, air-conditioned bus for the transfer to Bordeaux. The journey takes approximately 2 hours, following a scenic route through the French countryside. This transfer is scheduled to align with your cruise timetable, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience. As the historic center is not accessible to buses, the visit will take place entirely on foot, with in-depth commentary on the city's history, architecture, and culture.

      120 minutes here

    2. Cathedrale Saint-Andre Bordeaux

After arriving in Bordeaux, your local guide will take you on a guided walking tour of the city's main sights. A trained professional, the guide has deep knowledge of Bordeaux’s history, architecture, and culture. Your first stop is Cathedrale Saint-André, a site central to Bordeaux’s history. This cathedral hosted royal weddings, including that of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future King Louis VII. The guide will explain its construction phases, architectural changes, and role in the city's development. Next to the cathedral stands Pey Berland Tower, built separately to protect the main structure. Those who wish can climb it during free time for panoramic city views.

    3. Place de la Bourse

From the cathedral, you will continue on foot to Place de la Bourse, a key landmark that reflects Bordeaux’s transformation into a major trading center in the 18th century. Your guide will explain how this square was built as part of an urban renewal project that opened the city to the river, modernized trade, and introduced classical French architecture to Bordeaux. The symmetrical facades were designed to showcase the city’s wealth and power during its period of economic growth. In front of the square, the Water Mirror enhances the reflection of the buildings, creating an alternating effect between still water and mist. The guide will describe how this modern addition, installed in 2006, has become one of the most visited spots in Bordeaux, attracting visitors and photographers from around the world.

      30 minutes here

    4. Grand Theatre

Next, the tour stops at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, one of the most important cultural landmarks in the city. The guide will discuss its importance as a center for opera, theater, and ballet. The theater’s design was influenced by ancient Roman temples, with a row of Corinthian columns across the facade and sculptures representing the nine muses. It has hosted performances for over two centuries and remains a working venue today. At this point, you will have 1-1.5 hours of free time to explore the city at your own pace. You can walk through nearby shopping streets, visit cafés, or try local specialties such as canelés or fresh oysters. If you are interested in Bordeaux’s wine culture, an optional wine tasting is available at a well-known wine bar just a few minutes from where the tour ends. The tasting costs €30 per person, payable on-site, and includes a selection of Bordeaux wines with explanations from a local expert. No advance booking is required—just decide on the day.

      90 minutes here

    5. After free time, the group will meet at a designated location for the return journey. The drive back to the port takes approximately two hours, passing through the countryside and vineyards that surround Bordeaux. This provides a chance to relax and take in the landscape before reboarding your cruise ship after a day of sightseeing.

    Nope, never again

This tour contains way too much historical information. I believe we were the first group led on this tour by our guide, Jenn. She tried to include too much information in the time we had and left us with only 30 minutes of free time. She tried to say that we had to rush through the tour because our ship arrived late but it did not. She then said that she had to rush through the tour because we weren’t allotted enough time in port. If that is the case then Viator should not offer this tour or should omit some things from it.

Response from the operator: Dear Christina, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry that the balance between guided commentary and free time did not meet your expectations. As your ship was in port for only nine hours, this normally eight-hour excursion had to be shortened to seven hours. We informed all guests of this change in advance, as it reduced the planned time in Bordeaux by one hour. Nevertheless, the itinerary still included approximately one hour of free time. This is a guided cultural tour, and our guide was fully committed to sharing Bordeaux’s history and culture despite the more limited schedule. For guests who prefer less commentary and more time to explore independently, we also offer a “Bordeaux On Your Own” option. We appreciate your feedback and are sorry that this particular experience was not the right fit for you. Warm regards, Julia Vexperio

    It's a walking tour

This tour is definitely a walking tour on uneven surfaces and says so clearly in the description. Unfortunately a person in a motorized wheelchair thought they could do it. Bordeaux is not ADA compliant so we spent at least a third of our time waiting for the wheelchair who at the had to go in the streets instead of the sidewalks. What made it worse is the couple were jerks. The guy ran over the foot of two other clients and the wife tried to walk off the bus while we were loading knocking another person down. They never should have been allowed to take the tour. There are bus only tours that would have worked for them.

Response from the operator: Hello William, Thank you for sharing your experience and for highlighting the amount of walking involved in this excursion. As you correctly mentioned, the tour description clearly explains that exploring Bordeaux involves a considerable amount of walking, including historic and uneven surfaces. We take the physical requirements seriously and make a point of communicating them in advance so guests can assess whether the excursion is suitable for them. However, as this is a shared tour, we cannot ultimately control the individual circumstances or level of preparedness of every traveler who joins the group on the day. Our guides must then manage the situation as professionally as possible, showing consideration for all guests while keeping the group together and following the planned itinerary. We understand that this can sometimes affect the pace of a shared experience, and we appreciate your patience in this situation. We will continue reinforcing the mobility information provided before the tour so that future guests can make the most informed decision possible before booking. Thank you again for joining us and for sharing your feedback. Warm regards, Julia Vexperio
