Begin with an English-guided tour of an 800-year-old National Treasure temple, where you can experience the historic atmosphere and gain a deeper appreciation of Kyoto’s cultural heritage. You’ll then take part in kyudo (Japanese archery) using a real yumi (Japanese bow) and arrows under careful guidance. In traditional practice, students usually spend a long time training with a rubber bow before shooting real arrows. In our experience, however, even beginners can safely enjoy the feeling of drawing the bow and releasing the arrow in an authentic setting. This is more than just an activity—it’s a unique chance to experience Japanese archery and temple culture together in a way that is both accessible and deeply memorable.

Coolest Thing I Did in Japan
Okay this was genuinely one of the coolest things I did in Japan!! I had zero experience with archery but the instruction was so clear that I actually felt like I knew what I was doing by the end. The temple and the Buddha statues were also stunning. 100% recommend if you’re looking for something different!

The experience begins before you even pick up a bow. Walking through Daihoji temple, you’re surrounded by centuries-old Buddha statues that are nothing short of breathtaking. The main hall has a quiet grandeur that sets the perfect tone for what follows. A truly special place, far from the tourist crowds.

A memorable Kyudo experience in Kyoto
I’d known about Kyudo through anime for years, and I’d always wanted the chance to try it myself. Before my trip to Japan, I came across this experience and knew I had to book it—it honestly felt like a little dream come true. It was much harder than I expected! Every movement has a purpose, and I quickly realized it isn’t just about hitting the target. It takes a lot of patience and concentration, which made every successful shot feel even more rewarding. I’d recommend wearing comfortable clothes that are easy to move in, as you’ll be focusing on your posture and movements throughout the session. Practicing at such a beautiful temple made the whole experience even more special. If I ever get the chance to do it again, I’d love to wear the traditional Japanese archery uniform—it would make the experience feel even more immersive. By the end of the session, I had a much greater appreciation for Kyudo and why people dedicate so much time to it. If you’re looking for a traditional Japanese experience that’s a little different from the usual sightseeing, I’d definitely recommend giving this a try.
