Japanese beautiful culture!!!
I had such a beautiful and memorable experience in Kyoto! The tour took place at Ikka-in, a peaceful Zen temple located within Tofuku-ji. We started by exploring the beautiful Japanese garden, then had the chance to experience creating patterns in a traditional Zen garden ourselves. It was surprisingly calming and such a unique way to experience Zen culture in Kyoto. After that, we learned more about Maiko and traditional Japanese culture, followed by a beautiful Maiko dance performance. Seeing her kimono, movements, and performance up close made the experience feel very special and authentic! It felt much more personal than a typical sightseeing tour, and I really enjoyed being able to experience Japanese culture in such a quiet and intimate setting. If you're looking for a unique cultural experience in Kyoto beyond the usual tourist spots, I definitely recommend visiting Ikka-in at Tofukuji!

Experience Traditional Japanese Culture at a Beautiful Temple in Kyoto
The head priest of Ikka-in explained the concept of a kare-sansui (Zen garden) to us, and we were treated to the rare opportunity to actually design one ourselves. I felt as though my own inner state was being reflected in the garden, and I truly understood what the head priest meant when he said that designing a kare-sansui is a form of spiritual practice. Next, a truly lovely maiko performed two dances right before our eyes. I was completely captivated by her dance, which was beautiful down to the tips of her fingers. Her kimono was also stunning. Afterward, there was a Q&A session with the maiko, during which I learned things I wouldn’t normally have the chance to ask about. It was a truly precious experience at Tofukuji, a temple that has shaped Kyoto’s history, and it has become a wonderful memory.

A memorable, extraordinary experience
It was a hot summer day, but the tour was truly meaningful and memorable. Thoughtful measures were taken inside the historic buildings—such as air conditioning and electric fans—and I really appreciated being offered cold water right at the start. During the garden-making activity, it was fascinating to hear the head priest speak about the garden's origins and the challenges involved in maintaining it. The Maiko's dance was also wonderful. Watching the dance up close, I was captivated by the grace and cuteness of her movements, right down to the delicate gestures of her fingertips. There was also time for conversation and questions, making for a fun and valuable experience. The guide’s explanations were easy to follow, and the talk about Zen was particularly interesting. It was a lovely summer memory that allowed me to feel a personal connection to Kyoto's history and culture. Thank you very much. Best regards,

A valuable experience
It was a truly wonderful experience to see a real maiko perform up close and to gain access to a temple garden that is normally off-limits to the public, where I was even able to create patterns in the dry landscape garden.
