On the way to Kazbegi, we stop at the picturesque Zhinvali Water Reservoir, and then visit the Ananuri Castle on the Aragvi River. The castle was the scene of numerous battles and served as a shelter for the local population during the wars. Ananuri is considered one of the most beautiful historical monuments of Georgia. At an altitude of 2200 meters above the sea level, on the southern side of the plateau of the Greater Caucasus Range, and near the Cross Pass, there is the Gudauri Ski resort. The Panorama Gudauri is a monument to celebrate the friendship between Georgia and Russia. Stepantsminda is a small town. The main attraction here is the Church of the Holy Trinity – the Gergeti Monastery that is located at an altitude of 2170 meters under the mountain pick of Kazbegi. Due to its location on the top of a steep mountain, surrounded by very harsh nature, the church became the symbol of preservation of the Georgian relics.

Jinvali Water Reservoir, also known as a lake, is located on the Georgian Military Highway. Soviets constructed the dam in the 1980s—a wonderful place to take amazing pictures.

Ananuri fortress complex
Ananuri fortress dates to XVI-XVIII centuries and it is situated on the foreland by the river Aragvi. Ananuri was a castle and seat of the Eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi, a feudal dynasty which ruled the area from the 13th century. The castle was the scene of numerous battles. This is a perfect place for landscape photography, there are amazingly beautiful views of the fortress and Jinvali reservoir together. The fortress remained in use until the beginning of the 19th century. In 2007, the complex has been on the tentative list for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage Site program.

Jvari Pass Travertine Natural Monument is calcareous sinter or tufa in Baidara River valley (2197 m). It was formed when carbonate minerals precipitate out of ambient temperature water. Travertine in some places is covered with a thin layer of transparent water on the white surface of the slopes where intensive development process is still ongoing.

Gergeti Trinity Church
Gergeti Trinity Church is a popular name for Holy Trinity Church near Gergeti village. The church's location is the right bank of the Chkheri river under Kazbegi Mountain, 2170 meters above sea level. Gergeti Trinity Church was built in the 14th century, and this is the only cross-cupola church in Khevi province. In times of danger, precious relics from Mtskheta, including Saint Nino’s Cross, were brought here for safekeeping. During the Soviet Era, soviets prohibited religious services, but the church remained a popular tourist destination. The church is an active establishment of the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church. You will get an epic panoramic view of the whole valley from the church. Due to the church’s isolation in the steep mountainous area full of nature remains Georgia's most iconic tourist attraction. You will be impressed with the view of Mount Kazbegi, which is 5047 meters above sea level.

We had a lovely day...
We had a lovely day exploring Georgian culture and sites. Our guide Zouhair was knowledgeable and fun. Mind the weather when you go to the mountains as it gets colder than Tbilisi.

Driver was severely ill, and poor organization
The scenery, especially Mount Kazbek, is beautiful, but I can't recommend this tour as it was run. The driver was visibly very sick throughout the 14-hour trip, coughing heavily and constantly blowing his nose. In a closed minibus with about 15 people, this was a real health concern. My friend and I sat in the front row and repeatedly asked the guide to open a window for fresh air. They refused each time, saying a stop was coming soon. Eventually they turned on the AC, but other passengers got cold so it was switched off. I got sick a few days later, and it has disrupted my trip and plans. Other issues: we left Tbilisi an hour late, and road works plus traffic meant we returned at 11pm instead of 7pm. Stops were very short for the amount of driving, so we saw little. We booked the English-speaking tour but were placed in a mixed English/Russian group, and the English information was less than half of what was given in Russian.

Kazbegi day trip
It was a very enjoyable trip. Our guide, Nika, was very knowledgeable and informative. He explained everything about all the interesting points along the way, and even more than that, he explained everything in two languages, which made the trip very interesting and enjoyable for the entire group. Our driver, Ilo, was also very nice, kind, and polite.
