    What you'll see and do

    1. Hagia Sophia, located in Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the world’s most remarkable architectural masterpieces. Originally built in 537 AD as a Byzantine cathedral by Emperor Justinian I, it later became a mosque under the Ottoman Empire, then a museum in the 20th century, and once again a mosque in 2020. Its massive dome, stunning mosaics, and unique blend of Byzantine and Ottoman styles make it a symbol of cultural and religious history. Today, Hagia Sophia continues to inspire millions of visitors from around the globe.

    2. Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern, built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, is a vast underground water reservoir that once supplied the Great Palace and surrounding buildings in Constantinople. Measuring about 140 by 70 meters, it covers nearly 10,000 square meters and could store around 100,000 tons of water. Inside, 336 marble columns, many reused from earlier Roman structures, rise from shallow water and create the atmospheric setting that inspired the nickname “Sunken Palace.” The famous Medusa Heads and the “Weeping Column” add a touch of myth and mystery, making the cistern one of Istanbul’s most evocative historic sites.

    3. Hippodrome

The Sultanahmet hippodrome is located at the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, is renowned for its dense concentration of iconic landmarks that reflect the city’s rich Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. As the core of the Old City, it is home to monumental sites such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome, all positioned within walking distance of one another. The area’s narrow streets, traditional architecture, and archaeological remains illustrate centuries of cultural transformation. Today, Sultanahmet serves as both a major tourism hub and a living historical landscape, offering visitors a direct encounter with Istanbul’s layered past.

Built in the early 17th century, it continues to function as both a place of worship and a cultural treasure, welcoming visitors from all around the world. Step inside to admire its vast prayer hall, intricate calligraphy, and the harmony of Ottoman architecture that stands directly opposite the Hagia Sophia, offering travelers a timeless glimpse into Istanbul’s rich heritage.

    5. Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, a vibrant maze of more than 4,000 shops spread across dozens of streets in Istanbul’s historic center. Dating back to the 15th century, it offers visitors a unique chance to experience the atmosphere of Ottoman-era trade, with stalls selling everything from handmade carpets, jewelry, and antiques to colorful ceramics, textiles, and spices. Beyond shopping, the bazaar is a cultural experience in itself, filled with bustling energy, traditional tea houses, and centuries of history woven into its walls.

    Brilliant

What a fantastic tour! We did it with our children (7 & 9) and extra effort was taken to keep them entertained and engaged (inc the occasional magic trick, which they loved!). Really knowledgeable guide and the tour was very informative. Highly recommend

Great tour of the Hagia Sophia - learned so much!

Muhammet was extremely knowledgeable about the Hagia Sophia - but also Turkey's history as a whole. He was intentional in the context he shared to help us better understand the whole picture. He answered all of our questions with thoughtfulness, and we left feeling like we knew so much more about Turkey, the art and its history.

Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Istanbul.

How much does Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights cost?

    +

Prices start at $100 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Istanbul usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Istanbul is not rushed.

Is Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 38 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Istanbul, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights?

    +

Around 13 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Istanbul can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Istanbul and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Istanbul Skip the Line Private Tour Best Highlights start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Istanbul within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Istanbul?

    +

On Outty we rank every Istanbul experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Princes Islands Blue Journey from Old City Istanbul, Best of Istanbul 1, 2 or 3-Day Private Guided Istanbul Tour, Istanbul Luxury Bosphorus Yacht Cruise with Asian Side Stop. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Istanbul?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Istanbul?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
