3. Blue Mosque

Built in the early 17th century by Sultan Ahmed I, the Blue Mosque was a declaration of strength, deliberately positioned to stand in magnificent contrast to the nearby Hagia Sophia. 4. TopkapI Palace

For nearly 400 years, Topkapı Palace was the secluded, magnificent home and administrative center for the Ottoman Sultans—the men who ruled an empire stretching across three continents. 5. Basilica Cistern

Built by Emperor Justinian in 532 AD, this massive underground reservoir was designed to hold 80,000 tons of water for the Great Palace and surrounding area. You will explore the structure supported by 336 marble columns, many of which were recycled from older temples, each column telling its own silent story of Rome and Byzantium. Search for the secrets at the far corner of the cistern: the infamous Medusa Heads. These two massive stone heads of the mythological Gorgon are placed curiously upside down and sideways at the base of two columns. Your guide will share the competing ancient theories about their origin, their placement, and the superstition that surrounded them.
