Hagia Sophia, located in Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the world’s most remarkable architectural masterpieces. Originally built in 537 AD as a Byzantine cathedral by Emperor Justinian I, it later became a mosque under the Ottoman Empire, then a museum in the 20th century, and once again a mosque in 2020. Its massive dome, stunning mosaics, and unique blend of Byzantine and Ottoman styles make it a symbol of cultural and religious history. Today, Hagia Sophia continues to inspire millions of visitors from around the globe.

Basilica Cistern
The Basilica Cistern, built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, is a vast underground water reservoir that once supplied the Great Palace and surrounding buildings in Constantinople. Measuring about 140 by 70 meters, it covers nearly 10,000 square meters and could store around 100,000 tons of water. Inside, 336 marble columns, many reused from earlier Roman structures, rise from shallow water and create the atmospheric setting that inspired the nickname “Sunken Palace.” The famous Medusa Heads and the “Weeping Column” add a touch of myth and mystery, making the cistern one of Istanbul’s most evocative historic sites.

Excellent Guide Despite Ongoing Construction! 👌👏
Hagia Sophia is currently undergoing extensive construction, with many areas closed to visitors. However, Muhammed, made the experience truly worthwhile! He's like a walking Wikipedia, with an incredible knowledge of history and attention to every detail. His passion and expertise turned a limited visit into a fascinating and memorable experience. Highly recommended, especially Muhammed!

Bucket list memory
We had a guided tour of Hagia Sophia w/ Muhammed. Absolutely amazing! His knowledge of the building and its history was unsurpassed- from architecture through theology. Additionally, the meet up was incredibly smooth. Touring the building checked off a bucket list wish in itself, but doing so w/ Muhammed added a special dimension.

A great tour guide in Istanbul
Mohammed was a fantastic guide for our tour of Hagia Sophia. He carefully explained all the history surrounding it, along with maps from his iPhone to help illustrate his narrative. We (our group of 6) learned a tremendous amount and were impressed by his knowledge and ability to explain things clearly. He speaks great English as well. Highly recommend him.

Istanbul Private Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Istanbul.
How much does Istanbul Private Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $115 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Istanbul usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Istanbul Private Tour take?
+
Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Istanbul is not rushed.
Is Istanbul Private Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 75 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 45 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Istanbul, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Istanbul Private Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Istanbul Private Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Istanbul Private Tour?
+
Around 16 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Istanbul can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Istanbul and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Istanbul Private Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Istanbul within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Istanbul?
+
On Outty we rank every Istanbul experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Princes Islands Blue Journey from Old City Istanbul, Famous Istanbul Pub Crawl #1 Nightlife Experience, Best of Istanbul 1, 2 or 3-Day Private Guided Istanbul Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Istanbul?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Istanbul?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
What is included in Istanbul Private Tour?
+
Included: Private Licensed Tour Guide; and Skip the Ticket Purchase Line. Not included: Entrance fees; Admission fees; Lunch; and Tip for the Tour Guide ( Optional ). Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
Does Istanbul Private Tour include hotel pickup?
+
Yes, pickup is offered, or you can meet at the start point instead from 16 listed pickup locations in and around Istanbul. Be ready about 30 minutes before the start time.
What languages is Istanbul Private Tour offered in?
+
It runs in English. Pick your language when choosing a date and time, as not every departure runs in every language.
Will I get instant confirmation and a mobile ticket for Istanbul Private Tour?
+
Confirmation is sent by the operator after booking, usually within 48 hours; if it is not confirmed you are not charged. Mobile tickets are accepted, so you can show the voucher on your phone.

+
The operator notes: Infants are required to sit on an adult’s lap; Not recommended for pregnant travelers; and Strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed upstairs. Baby Strollers must be carried by hand. If accessibility is critical, contact the operator after booking to confirm arrangements for your date.
