About this experience
Istanbul’s Old City is where the medieval and modern meet, and on this tour we’ll explore that intersection through the food, markets and people who keep the area moving. We’ll begin with breakfast alongside local shopkeepers in a traditional teahouse before heading into the lesser-known streets around the Egyptian Spice Market and deeper into Fatih. Along the way, we’ll meet wholesalers, cheesemongers and artisans who help feed the city. In Kantarcılar, we’ll visit a fourth-generation confectioner making Turkish delight, stop for tea in an old caravanserai and discover hidden historic sites, including an Ottoman-era bozacı. We’ll finish with a generous lunch of traditional pit-roasted lamb at a family-run restaurant beside the Byzantine aqueduct, with plenty of other tastes along the way.

The tour was was amazing and Esin was the BEST!!
We did a Culinary Backstreets of the Old City in Istanbul with Esin yesterday. We had the most amazing day. The four of us 2 adults, a 21yo daughter and 19 yo son all loved it and agreed that it was one of the highlights of 3 week holiday in Turkey. Esin was so warm, funny and engaging. She didn’t make us try anything we didn't feel comfortable to eat however having said that all the food was so delicious so we wanted to sample it all. Her interaction with all the local Turkish people and stall holders along the tour was so beautiful and sincere. They all love her and made the day even more special. We left loving her too. We totally recommend this tour and especially Esin to anyone interested into doing a food tour of Istanbul Old city.
Response from the operator: Thank you for the wonderful review and for spending the day with us in Istanbul. We are thrilled that your family enjoyed connecting with the local stall holders and experiencing the daily life of the city. Your visit helps support these unsung heroes and goes a long way in preserving our cherished culinary traditions.

Suprised & Delighted
I cannot speak highly enough of this tour. It show cased some fabulous turkish food - staples done exceptionally well such as the doner kebab which was cooked in the rotisserie with kegebales threaded through the meat layers, the.whipped buffalo curd with local honey drizzled on it or the spicy beed sausage served from a butcher and tucked away in the maze of suburban streets. There were also suprises and new flavours such as the boza, a thick fermented mullet drink served with crunchy chickpeas. The tour was made extra special by our guide Kadir who was kind, knowledgeable and had a great rapport with everyone we came across enroute. We were also exceptionally lucky to have a wonderful group of travellers with us, who, along with Kadir, made it feel more like a day eating wonderful food with friends rather than a tour.
Response from the operator: Thank you for the review and for sharing your wonderful experience exploring the winding streets of Istanbul with us. We are thrilled that you enjoyed discovering these unique flavors and sharing a meal with friends alongside Kadir. Thank you for supporting our city's unsung culinary heroes and helping us preserve these cherished local traditions.

Hidden gems across Istanbul's old city
We had an incredible day with Ibrahim, exploring Istanbul's old city. Ibrahim was incredibly knowledgeable, not just about the delicious food we enjoyed, but also the city's long history and vibrant culture. We were taken to 10 different locations, all frequented predominantly by locals, enjoying authentic dishes we never would have discovered by ourselves. Ibrahim has a great raptor with each vendor, ensuring our experience was as hospitable as possible. This tour is the perfect way to explore Istanbul's unique and rich relationship with food. Thank you Ibrahim!
Response from the operator: Thank you for the review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed experiencing the vibrant daily life and rich history of Istanbul. By walking with us, you are directly supporting the unsung heroes of the kitchen and helping to preserve these beautiful culinary traditions.

Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Istanbul.
How much does Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City cost?
+
Prices start at $25 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Istanbul usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City take?
+
Plan for about 5.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Istanbul is not rushed.
Is Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 87 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 118 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Istanbul, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City?
+
Around 41 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Istanbul can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Istanbul and add a light layer if any part of the 5.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Istanbul Culinary Secrets of the Old City start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Istanbul within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Istanbul?
+
On Outty we rank every Istanbul experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Best of Istanbul 1, 2 or 3-Day Private Guided Istanbul Tour, Istanbul Luxury Bosphorus Yacht Cruise with Asian Side Stop, ISTANBUL BEST: Iconic Landmarks Full Day PRIVATE Guided City Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Istanbul?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Istanbul?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
