    Too hot to handle

We joined the hop on hop off bus at Circus Maximus (stop 4). Having booked online it was hard to find the bus stop from the tiny digital map (it’s halfway along Circus Maximus just over the brow of a hill and not quite visible from the Metro Station). The service is a bit disorganised - the driver told us to get on and use our online booking QR code to collect tickets from somebody at stop 5, but nobody could help us with this admin job until stop 6. We didn’t find any earphones on the first bus. The buses wait for about 10 minutes at each stop. There is some limited AC on the ground floor but it barely makes an impact, so we felt like dogs locked in a hot car. The top floor is fully open air - we weren’t up for that on a 36 degree day. After getting off at Termini we decided to use our Metro passes to get back to Circus Maximus in more comfort…

    Old and broken buses

First bus broke. Second bus was a chaos to get in. Audios did not work. Upper roof was broken ans could not be closed.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry your experience was affected by these issues. Unfortunately, the first bus experienced a technical problem, which caused delays and made the following bus more crowded than usual. We also regret that you experienced problems with the audio guide and the upper roof. We take your comments seriously and will share them with our operational team to help improve the service. Had to wait over an hour for a bus

All went well with this company until late in the day when we had to wait over an hour for a bus, and we weren’t sure if any more buses would come. Thankfully we weren’t in a rush, but it was cert hot and my elderly mother was struggling in the heat. We were told buses would come every 10-15 mins, but this wasn’t the case. Other bus lines were coming past frequently, so in future I’d go with the red buses or city sightseeing.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the unusually long wait, especially given the very hot weather and your elderly mother’s difficulties. Our advertised frequency is 10–15 minutes, but unfortunately traffic, road conditions and unexpected delays can significantly affect the service, particularly later in the day. We fully understand how frustrating and uncomfortable this must have been, and we are sorry that this experience affected your overall impression of our service. A great way to see the city. The audio guide was interesting and entertaining.

Response from the operator: Dear customer, Thank you for your lovely review! Very good.

We only chose this as it offered a Kids English commentary - and we were delighted we did! It was great to keep our 9yo entertained - the adult commentary would have bored her. So if you have kids, this is the tour bus for you!

Response from the operator: Dear customer, Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that your 9-year-old enjoyed our Kids English commentary and that it helped make the tour more fun and engaging for her. We’re especially happy that you chose I Love Rome for this reason! We hope to welcome you and your family back to Rome again soon. Best regards, I Love Rome Hop On Hop Off City Tour

I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.

How much does I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.

Is I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 59 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.5/5 across 1,026 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour?

    +

Around 359 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does I Love Rome : Hop on Hop off Open Bus Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rome?

    +

Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

    +

April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rome?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
