About this experience
Saddle up for an unforgettable journey on the slopes of Europe's most famous volcano. This isn't your typical horseback ride - you'll traverse ancient lava paths while your expert guide shares stories of Vesuvius's dramatic history and the civilizations it has shaped. Feel the power beneath you as your horse carries you through landscapes forged by centuries of volcanic activity. The panoramic views of the Bay of Sorrento, and surrounding countryside create perfect photo opportunities at every turn. Experience the thrill of riding where Roman soldiers once marched, on trails that wind through vineyards growing in the world's most fertile volcanic soil. Please note: The horseback ride is at a slow pace, it's meant to spend time with animals and admire the views, it's not suitable for those who would like to galop/ride fast

Such a great experience!...
Such a great experience! The driver Marco who picked us up was so friendly and helpful. The horse trainers were also very helpful in making us feel at ease as we were beginners. Passing through the vineyard on horseback is an experience I’ll never forget.
Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing such a lovely review! We are so glad that Marco started your day off right with his friendly service. Our horse trainers always strive to make beginners feel completely at ease, so it is fantastic to hear they succeeded in making you feel comfortable. Riding through the vineyards is indeed a magical experience, and we are honored to have provided a memory you'll never forget. We would love to host you again on your next trip!

Loved the ride!
My husband and I booked this experience - we should have added the lunch and wine tasting. I would recommend this to riders with some experience handling a horse. The views were breathtaking. Be sure to take a backpack with water. Rosella was a fantastic guide!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind words! We are thrilled that you chose to stay with us and had a wonderful experience. We truly hope to have the pleasure of hosting you again in the future.

I think it should be...
I think it should be clearly that the ride is not going to take you anywhere near the Vesuvius mountain. I was kind of hoping to be able to see it up-close, but that wasn't the case. its just a basic horse riding experience. You could get it anywhere. wasn't anything great
Response from the operator: We are very saddened by this review. Despite trying to call you and sending several messages, we did not receive a reply to have a direct conversation. When this happens, it makes us very sad because we would always like the chance to explain—specifically, to explain what was perhaps not read before booking. As the name "horseback ride on Vesuvius" suggests, the experience takes place inside the Vesuvius National Park at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level. The only horse trails in the park are at this height. Getting closer to the crater is illegal and extremely unsafe for both the horses and the riders, and this is clearly specified in two different parts of our experience description. From our vineyard, it is possible to admire a splendid view of the Gulf of Sorrento, Capri, and Mount Vesuvius itself, but it is highly likely that on a cloudy day at the end of February, the sky might simply be overcast. We are deeply sorry that you reduced all of this to a basic experience you feel you could get anywhere. Behind this work, there is the true dedication of a team working hard for the well-being of the horses and for your safety, while sharing the story of our territory, our wines, the wildlife, and our region. Reviewing our product with two stars destroys all our hard work, and the missed opportunity to speak with you directly is what hurts the most for all of us who are deeply committed to providing our customers with a top-quality experience.

Why this scores 83
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Horseback Riding on Vesuvius: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Pompeii.
How much does Horseback Riding on Vesuvius cost?
+
Prices start at $82 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Pompeii usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Horseback Riding on Vesuvius take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Pompeii is not rushed.
Is Horseback Riding on Vesuvius worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 83 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 150 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Pompeii, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Horseback Riding on Vesuvius?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Horseback Riding on Vesuvius suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Horseback Riding on Vesuvius?
+
Around 53 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Pompeii can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Pompeii and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Horseback Riding on Vesuvius start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Pompeii within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Pompeii?
+
On Outty we rank every Pompeii experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Premium Minivan Trip from Rome: Pompeii Tour & Lunch in Sorrento, Skip the Line Guided Tour of Pompeii Led by an Archaeologist, Explore Pompeii with an Archaeologist. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Pompeii?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Pompeii?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
