In Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods of Mouraria, Graça and Santa Clara, old traditions mingle with new restaurants, immigrant communities and a rapidly changing city. On this afternoon food tour, we’ll explore these neighborhoods bite by bite, with a special focus on the local tascas that remain essential to everyday Lisbon life. We’ll begin with daily specials at a decades-old tasca before heading uphill to a modern taberna reimagining Portugal’s fish and seafood traditions. Along the way, we may taste fresh clams, the classic prego steak sandwich, house-made piripiri and garum, a fish-based condiment with roots dating back to Roman times. We’ll also pause at a former 16th-century monastery for something sweet, enjoy a tasting of local wines and finish at a historic palace with chilled muscatel and sunset views toward São Jorge Castle. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the tour also includes Lisbon’s lively Feira da Ladra flea market.

Finding food and places only the locals know
This is the fourth Cuinary Backstreets tour I have done and they never fail to enchant, educate and enable you to eat food you may otherwise not discover in parts of the city you may also not find unless taken by a local. Thoroughly recommended.

Great tour
Andre was an outstanding guide. Very knowledgeable, friendly, fun to be with. He went at the right pace and allowed the group to enjoy one another. Great tour of local eateries off the beaten path!
Want to try something different and sample some of the food eaten by locals? Try this tour to learn more about the history of the city as well as the story behind the local Toscana scene. Laura the tour guide brings this story to life and is passionate about sharing her knowledge and insights with others. We really enjoyed this tour and would do it again!

Amazing Food Tasting with Laura in Lisbon!
We had an incredible time on the Culinary Backstreets tour with Laura! She was extremely knowledgeable and introduced us to several traditional tascas, each offering delicious and unique Portuguese specialties. Along the way, we sampled a wide variety of local dishes and experienced Lisbon from a true local’s perspective.
