What you get

    About this experience

The Durrells arrived in Corfu in 1935 and stayed until 1939. In these four years, they lived in different spots around the island. In this tour, we will explore Corfu following the footsteps of the family on the island. We will visit some of their Corfu homes and we will discover some lovely filming sets of the series. Beginning at the port with a meet and greet service in the terminal, during the 4,5 hours of the tour we will drive along the beautiful northeast coast of Corfu to reach the White House in Kalami, once home to Lawrence Durrell and his wife Nancy, then we will drive back down to Danilia Village, where most of the series was filmed, we will visit Kanoni to admire the stunning views of the Mouse Island and the Strawberry Pink Villa, and lastly take a stroll around Corfu Town where you can admire the statues of the writers in Durrell’s Boschetto and discover the old city of Corfu, a beautiful historic center, before driving back to your cruise ship.

    What you'll see and do

    1. The White House was the home of Lawrence and Nancy Durrell in the 1930’s in northeast Corfu. Nested in the picturesque shore of Kalami, overlooking the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea, the Venetian villa is available to visit as a museum to explore and learn about the family’s story. During our stop there, you can enjoy a drink and relax at their beachfront restaurant while enjoying the view and nature that inspired Lawrence’s writing. The scenic drive from the port to Kalami is about 45 minutes long, and there’s perfect spots on the way to stop for pictures and admire the island’s beauty.

    2. Danilia Village Corfu

Danilia Village was the main filming set for the Durrell series. Danilia Village has no permanent residents, as it’s a replica of a 1930’s traditional Corfiot village, used as a museum, filming set, wedding and private events set. The village was rebuilt in the 1970’s after an earthquake by the Boua family as an open-air museum, approaching the atmosphere of the old city of Corfu, in a colourful traditional village style. In Danilia Village you can find two squares, a church, a folklore museum, a traditional cafe, an open-air and an indoor taverna and other replicas of old shops and buildings, filled with antique items. Danilia Village is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy some time in a scenic environment away from modern reality, relax and experience learning Corfu’s history in a set that fits the period. While we’re there you can enjoy a refreshment or a tasty lunch break at the cafe and the tavernas, take pictures and stroll through the sets of the series. Entarnce fee 10€/pax

    3. Kanoni

Kanoni was named after a canon that was placed at the edge of its peninsula by the French during their dominion on the island (1978) and it’s still there today. In Kanoni you will have the chance to admire and take pictures of the popular landmark of Corfu, the Mouse Island, or Pontikonisi as the locals call it, which the Durrells loved to visit during their stay. Across Kanoni you can admire the view of Perama and The Strawberry Pink Villa, which Gerald famously quotes in his book (“The villa was small and square, standing in a tiny garden with an air of pink-faced determination”, My Family And Other Animals). Surrounding Kanoni excavations have revealed Palaiopolis, the ancient town of Corfu (dated since the 8th century BC), and therefore the area also raises historic interest to the visitors.

      30 minutes here

    4. Corfu Old Town

To finish off our tour, we could not miss a stroll through the historic center of Corfu Town, which is a part of the UNESCO heritage. It’s a pedestrian area, paved with cobblestone, built in old Venetian architecture, you can see hundreds-years-old buildings still standing. You can walk around the narrow kantounia, visit the town’s shops, and walk around Spianada square, the largest square in the Balkans. Across Spianada square you can admire the old Venetian Fortress, and right next to it there’s the Boschetto garden, which is decorated with the busts of Lawrence and Gerald Durrell. You'll also visit Saint Michael and George Palace, which houses the museum of Asian Art and was also used as a set in the series. When you’re done walking, you will board our comfortable vehicle to be dropped off back to your cruise ship, a 5 minute drive from town.

More of a transfer than a tour

We thought we would get some history/information while driving around the island but our driver was more of a transfer vs a guide. We wish we didn’t do the tour and just explored Old Town as we didn’t have much time there nor did we get any history there. If you want to just drive all over the island and look at views, this is for you. If you want substance on the tour, I recommend something else. It was also very expensive Driver was nice and good driver but just no information from him.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We truly appreciate every review, as it helps us improve the quality of our services. However, we would like to clarify a few important points. Your review refers to a tour that includes the services of a professional licensed guide. After checking our booking records, we were unable to find any reservation under your name for this specific tour. Our company offers different types of tours. Some include only a driver, whose responsibility is to safely transport guests to the locations described in the itinerary. Others include the services of a licensed professional tour guide, who provides historical information, explanations, and a complete guided experience. The description of each tour clearly states what is included. Tours with a licensed guide are naturally more expensive because they include professional guiding services. Tours with a driver only do not include historical commentary or guided explanations, as drivers are not licensed to provide official guided tours. Based on your comments, it appears that you selected a driver-only tour rather than a tour with a licensed guide. We believe this was clearly stated in the tour description. Nevertheless, if there was any misunderstanding or if the information was not clear enough, we sincerely apologize. Our team is always happy to answer any questions before a booking is made and to explain exactly what each tour includes, so that every guest can choose the service that best matches their expectations and preferences. Thank you once again for your feedback, and we wish you all the best.

Durrells in Corfu tour is great even for people who never heard of the Durrells!

I thought this was the best experience of all my 10 excursions on my cruise! My guide/driver Sandra was so enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoyed everywhere we went, especially the Daniela Village and the "White House.” It was nice to have a tour just for me so that I could spend as much time in each place as I wanted to. I was sad when the tour ended. I want to go back to Corfu!

Enjoyable Tour of Corfu; Exceptional Driver Marco

This private tour was a terrific experience for us to see Corfu and the Durrels sights. Our driver Marco was exceptional, as we always felt comfortable and safe traveling through some tight and challenging areas while still seeing the sights of Corfu. We were able to enjoy our stops at our pace and without feeling rushed. I would highly recommend both Marco and this private tour to anyone seeking an enjoyable day in Corfu.

    Great Day on Corfu

Myself my wife and friends, booked a tour on Corfu, visiting the "Durrells" hotspots on the island. we were met at the port by "Marco" in a brand new smart Mercedes which was spotless! He made us feel completely at ease and really went the extra mile to plan our few hours on the island to make sure that he took us to the places that were of interest to us. We visited Lawrence Durrells last house in Kalami, then on to the famous village where many films have been shot, lastly Marco took us to mouse Island and the awesome photo opportunities that awaited us. All in all a great few hours with a professional and genuinely nice guy, who handled Corfu's crazy roads with ease and professionalism. Definitely recommend this company, worth every $$$

Response from the operator: Thank very much for your review. We are really happy that you enjoyed the tour.

What should I bring or wear?

How many days do you need in Corfu?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
