Explore one of Vietnam’s most fascinating and iconic spots on this unique half-day photo tour. The Hai Van Pass separates northern and central Vietnam, two very distinct climates and cultures. It also boasts some of the most spectacular views in the entire country. We travel by early morning train from Danang, and capture some of these mountain and seascapes from our window, as well as local life in the carriage. Then we jump off at the tiny station of Lang Co, and head over to photograph the fishermen at work in this tranquil lagoon. We’ll be looking at how to shoot mini-stories of daily working life. Finally we head back up the mountain by road and shoot some more incredible landscapes both north and south from the top of the pass. Learn the art of travel photography while discovering this captivating and unforgettable area of Vietnam.

What you'll see and do
Da Nang
Hotel Pick Up Service starts at 5:30 from either Da Nang or Hoi An We arrive at Danang train station, and before setting out we’ll have time to check camera settings and enjoy a preview of the tour and workshop. We’ll also have a tasty coffee and bite to eat while waiting for the train.

Hai Van Pass
Sometimes the train is delayed, and if so we’ll use this time to work on to look at some composition tips, and even shoot some portraits in the station. Once we head out, we’ll set up in the local passenger carriage so we have the chance to open our window and capture shots of the train winding round the mountain. There are great views all the way along, and we’ll be looking at how to compose these kind of pictures to bring out the best in the landscape. Trains are also fantastic places to shoot portraits of both passengers and the busy train staff. We’ll have a chance to work on different kinds of portrait, but also learn some ways to approach people for pictures.

Lang Co
We now hop off the train at the sleepy local station of Lang Co. Nearby, we can find a fantastic little fishing community on the edge of the lagoon, where the locals use traditionally hand-woven coracle boats to bring in their catch. Now we’re looking at how to shoot relationship shots, telling a story about the people in their working environment, in this case a stunning subtropical lagoon. Time to hit the road back up towards the Hai Van Pass. On the way up, we’ll capture magnificent landscapes overlooking Lang Co lagoon and beach. This must be one of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world.

Hai Van Pass
We reach the top of the Hai Van Pass, with jaw-dropping views both north towards Lang Co and Hue, and south, over the city of Danang. High up over the roadside shacks offering snacks, we find the remains of several war era bunkers and gun emplacements, now popular places for locals to have their wedding shots taken. These make for fascinating foreground features for our landscapes, and also interesting subjects in their own right. Time for a spot of lunch and a coffee, before we head back down to Danang. We’ll also be reviewing some of the great pictures we’ve taken during the tour in a scenic spot.

Fantastic ..
Vietnam in Focus – Da Nang - This day with Nghia (Thomas) was an absolute joy – from start to finish. The sense of discovery starts on the beachfront in Da Nang shooting such a variety of scenes – the early morning fitness routine, the swimmers, the fishermen in their circular boats and the ladies selling the daily catch. With the light emerging on the horizon the shots tell the story. Expert guidance from Nghia on shooting manual, different perspectives, having fun. Onwards to the Lady Buddha, early enough to miss all the crowds to have this amazing site to ourselves – that is the hallmark of a really well planned tour, to get there before everyone, being able to capture the peace and tranquility of the site. Again shot selection, guidance given with the grace that this site inspires. A brief stop at the bustling Da Nang port, then off up to Hai Van Pass where it was all about freestyle – capturing the trucks climbing and descending this awe inspiring road. Over to Lang Co where, in addition to catching the Ho Chi Min City to Han Oi train (was that ever good timing), Nghia knew the right place to go to shoot the oyster harvest – having places to ourselves was invaluable. This was not due to luck, this is because the scouting work Nghia had done to know his locations. Back to Da Nang where lunch was a revelation, but can you believe there was still more. Off to the Da Nang market - this is no ordinary market visit – this is thrilling – the market transforms late afternoon to something so much more – somehow I do not want to spoil the surprise it was so good. There is nothing I would change about the day – it was perfect and I can only thank Nghia and Vietnam in Focus for this most marvelous of experiences.

Amazing Experience
The photography experience was spectacular, the car and driver was prompt and the locations visited beautiful with many photography oppertunities. Chris was an experienced and helpful guide who was able to help take excellent pictures along with being a genuine and well traveled person able to talk about many different aspects of the trip. The food locations visited were also very tasty and local with the frog being particularly delectible. 5 Stars!

Fabulous photo tour
Enjoyable and formative. Got some great photos of local Vietnamese life away from the crowds. Our guide Cristian was extremely helpful and knowledgeable with assisting us with photos, our cameras , composition tips and maximising photo opportunities. We learnt a lot. Cristian is a lovely host and also introduced us to vietnamese coffee.
