What you get
About this experience
Strikeout for gold on a journey back to the rough and seductive roots of the Klondike Gold Rush’s most famous boomtown. This tour will take you from the docks of present-day Skagway to the historic businesses and buildings that comprise this National Park town. We’ll travel back in time to experience Skagway in its heyday when there were wooden boardwalks, ladies of the night calling from windows and gunslingers sidling up to the local bar. You’ll hear stories of the foolhardy stampeders, industrious native guides, quick-thinking ladies, wild west mobsters and desperate entrepreneurs who gave this stretch of Alaska’s coastits living legacy. After the tour, you’ll know a lot more about this quirky frontier town that gets up to one million visitors each summer. This tour is a must for any curious mind looking to discover Skagway’s close connection to the land and entrepreneurial spirit. Join me on an insider’s guide to the Gateway to the Klondike.

Fantastic
Fantastic way to see Skagway on your own There was still so much free time after the tour. I loved that I was able to pause it too

Unable to use
Must be used while physically moving through the walking tour. Wish I could have gone through it virtually since I ran out of time and couldn’t complete the actually tour.
Response from the operator: Hi there, You can enjoy any of our tours virtually by selecting Virtual Playback. If you run out of time en route, you can listen to the tour virtually anytime. If you go back to the app and select the tour, just tap on Virtual Playback. You will have lifetime access to this tour so that you can listen to it any number of times, either on-location or virtually. Regards, Brent

Very Disappointing !!
First of all, we were not given our Login Code that was supposed to be on our ticket. We had to call the office to get it. You cannot press Start to begin the tour until you arrive at the Starting Point. The Starting Point could not be reached due to the street being closed. We found a policeman who escorted us through the barricades to the correct building which was also closed. My friend was able to Press Start to begin the tour. But, my phone app would not work at all. The audio was in and out. We could see on her phone that we were in the correct location, but the app kept saying we were Lost! It was a very frustrating experience.
Response from the operator: Hi I'm sorry to hear about your frustrating experience. On our side it shows that you did receive the code and it was printed on your ticket. If the starting point is blocked off, we've included a Resume function so you can start the tour from a separate location and not miss a thing. Did you not see the Resume button listed underneath the Start Tour button? Please feel free to contact us directly so we can investigate this further. Thanks, Alicia

Good but not great.
It's a good idea, but it was awkward to manipulate. The starting point was blocked by a cruise ship parking guy. The app was in and out and caused a frustrating tour. Might try it one more time?

Skagway Tour (in the rain)
The Skagway Tour was very well done and informative. The tour guide sounded like he was a local and took us through some off the beaten path to see several historical homes and buildings. The walking instructions were well done and the technology worked well.

Why this scores 48
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Skagway.
How much does Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway cost?
+
Prices start at $8 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Skagway usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway take?
+
Plan for about 0.7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Skagway is not rushed.
Is Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 48 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.4/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable outdoors in Skagway, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 0.7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Skagway can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Skagway and add a light layer if any part of the 0.7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Gold Rush Boomtown: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Skagway start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Skagway within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Skagway?
+
Skagway is a Klondike Gold Rush town built for excursions: White Pass and Yukon Route rail trips, Yukon border drives, glacier flights, dog sledding on ice fields and gold panning. On Outty we rank every Skagway experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Skagway Shore Excursion: Full-Day Tour of the Yukon, Skagway City and Summit Tour, Skagway Shore Excursion: Half-Day Tour to the Yukon Border and Suspension Bridge. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Skagway?
+
May to September, the cruise season. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Skagway?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
