What you get

    About this experience

Join a private journey from Reykjavik to the Westman Islands, a cluster of volcanic wonders just off Iceland's south coast. We drive for about 2 hours to Landeyjahöfn, where we board the ferry bound for the Westman Islands. The 45 minute boat cruise unveils a panorama of the islands' unique cliffs and slopes. We will spent about 5 hours on Heimaey, the largest and sole inhabited island of the archipelago, born from underwater volcanic eruptions. We will explore the islands' volcanic heritage at the Eldheimar Museum. We will venture to Stórhöfi, Europe's windiest point, which offers unparalleled vistas of the Westman Islands. Here, you might meet curious sheep and, during their summer visit, catch a glimpse of playful puffins fluttering around (usually between the end of May and the end of August). You will also see the Elephant Rock and the ruins of the original settlers' farmhouse. We then take the ferry back and drive back to Reykjavik, which will take around 3 hours.

    Disappointing guide

It was disappointing to observe Orvar as a tour guide. Yes he knows people and history and that is well and good , but he has significant limitations- some physical and some attitudinal. He seems worn down( understandably) and there is no real enthusiasm, energy, in how he presents himself . He talks but has a hard time listening( partly due to hearing issues). My husband sat up front with him and wondered about a less than optimal safe driving situation due to his physical condition. He has clearly learned to compensate , but that doesnt make it optimal. Also for the price we paid for a totally private tour, he wasnt happy hearing our preferences when he had hs own agenda. We had to insist twice that we were starving at 12:10 ( tour started 730 AM)and needed to eat when his plan was to visit the museum beforehand . .When i asked him if a prominent restaurant on the island required a reservation, his answer was basically “ I have no idea; you will have to figure that out yourselves.” Overall the island was lovely, but if you want to have input in the way that things happen in a private “premium” tour, with a person that is well able to engage actively and enthusiastically with you, I would look elsewhere.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your comments I feel sorry for you to feel this way. I was not happy with you either. I appreciate your concern about my disability limitation but that in no way has any effect on secure driving. I have never had a complaint. And my hearing is in top order so i assume this is a poor joke. but it was difficult to hear your soft voice from the back seat. And the attitude well i try to be reserved when encountering guest who ask for changes on the fly without any even reasonable notice. And it was obvious now that you had not made the necessary effort to read about the itinerary. Its a very limited stop on the island itself due to the time element in the island so in order to see all important sites a time schedule is necessary ... and in particular with 2 cruise ships in and a mass of people (over 2500 the estimate) emerging on the town creating delays in many ways. NB: yes, IF your had made me aware at the start of the program that you had selected specific preferences and did not want to follow the itinerary set out in our tour program I could have tried to follow those preferences within the time frame given As for lunch, we being experienced, know that 12 Noon is the busiest time and therefore we normally do lunch 13:30 -14:00. As we pulled up we/you could see that cruise tourists were swarming the restaurant and when you asked if a reservation could be made my answer was NO you just have to go inside and find if they can help you with a table. Wen you left the jeep I called the head waiter and asked them if they could please possibly assist you two with a table and take your order quickly, despite that the lunch did took a long time due to the huge mass of cruise ship tourists. By the way we have 3 prominent restaurants in the town and a few snack bars. Then also there was hot and cold food on the ferry both ways so there was no need to starve. I advised you of this when we boarded the ferry. I thank you for the opportunity to reply here. However, my suggestion to you is that next time you take a predefined private tour with time elements is that you make sure the guide knows that you have other preferences and advise this before hand or at start of the tour. Wish you the best in your future travels. Regards Orvar

Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Reykjavik.

How much does Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik cost?

    +

Prices start at $1850 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Reykjavik usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik take?

    +

Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Reykjavik is not rushed.

Is Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 50 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4/5 across 2 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Reykjavik, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Reykjavik can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Reykjavik and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Full Day Private Westman Island Tour from Reykjavik start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Reykjavik within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Reykjavik?

    +

On Outty we rank every Reykjavik experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Reykjavik Food Walk - Local Foodie Adventure in Iceland, Small-Group Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon with Ticket & Kerid Crater, Reykjavík Small group Walking Tour - by CityWalk. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Reykjavik?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Reykjavik?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
