Our Lady of the Rocks
Our Lady of the Rocks is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro (the other being Sveti Đorđe island). It is an artificial island created by bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with rocks. The Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is the largest building on the islet, and has a museum attached to it. According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea on 22 July 1452. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays. Every year on the sunset of 22 July, an event called fašinada in the local dialect, when local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island, takes place. The church was renovated in 1722

Perast

Dubbed one of the most beautiful places in the Bay of Kotor, Perast has an incontestable allure that’s charming guests with its ancient demeanor. The old town is facing the sea, overlooking two islets: St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks, each one with their respective graceful chapels. The contrasting beauties of old stone and water, perpetual dialogues of an ancient past with the curiosity of today’s world are just some of the many sensations this setting emits. The caves of Spila, above Perast, are literally museums housing artifacts that bespeak the presence of Neolithic culture and how civilizations like the Illyrians, Romans, and early Christians populated this area since prehistoric times.

Kotor Old Town
Kotor is more than two thousand years old, and its name stems from the word Dekatera (from the old Greece katareo – meaning HOT). The written sources mention the “Upper town”, which referred to the oldest part of the lodgment on the top of the hill Sveti Ivan (St. Ivan) which is located above Kotor, and the “Lower town”, present old town Kotor. The rich history of Kotor, is parallel to the rich culture of the town with which many conquerors ruled: the Illyrians, the Venetians, the Austrians, the French… First the town was ruled by the Illyrians (III and II century B.C.). On the other hand the Romans are considered to be the founders of Kotor 168 B.C. – 476 A.D. Kotor was under their reign until the break of Roman Empire in 476 A.D under the name Akruvijum. After the Romans, until the year 1185 Kotor was under the reign of Byzantium. Under the Byzantium reign Kotor was named Dekaderon.

Had a day Trip was brilliant loads to see, and guide very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend a trip on this boat. From iberostar to Kotor Bay.

Great value for money day trip
We booked this day trip with a rep from Petra Boats at our hotel (Iberostar Waves hotel). As part of the trip cost we got a taxi boat ride from our hotel to Herceg Novi where we transferred onto a bigger tour boat. The boat ride was comfortable with some stunning scenery. There was a bit of commentary in Serbian & English but to be honest it was difficult to hear it over the engine noise and other passengers, and it only tended to be information about the next stop. We stopped at Our lady of the rocks for our first stop, and it was worth getting off and walking around the island even though we didn't visit inside the church. We then went on to Kotor and on the way were provided with a traditional drink and some bread and sardines, which was a nice touch as the journey was quite long, so it kept us going! Kotor was the best stop for me, and the 2 hours we had wasn't enough, but it did give us a taste of what it was like and I would definitely want to visit again. Our final stop was then Perast, and this was a lovely place and was very picturesque. There was a lot of activity at one of the hotels as a wedding was being prepared for, so this was interesting to view! We then returned, dropping off passengers at different stops before we then got dropped off back at Herceg Novi where a Petra taxi picked us back up and took us back to our hotel. It was a long day but great value for money and a great chance to visit different places in Montenegro. The crew were hard working, polite and helpful, and I would definitely recommend this day trip!

Fantastic Day Out
We have just returned from our holiday in Herceg Novi and whilst there went on the full day Boka Bay trip. We were collected from our hotel the Iberostar Waves and dropped off back there. We had a great day taking in the amazing scenery whilst commentary was given on things we were seeing. All the stops were excellent and very interesting and in all a very worthy great value day out in amazing weather. We fully recommend this trip and suggest you book direct with the operator to get the best value deal.

Great value for money day trip
Excellent value for money (€45) each day trip. Stunning scenery and plenty of time for sightseeing at each stop. Crew were great. Would definitely recommend. 9am - 5pm

Great day tip - does what it says on the tin
As others have commented this is a great all day trip. Arguably there might be cheaper ones but we had a great day with this firm interspersed with great commentary. Couldn’t fault them. And my god were they punctual with their departure times! Worth check whether/how many cruise ships are visiting Kotor as this was crammed with just two.
