1. Pioneer Courthouse Square

   Portland's central public plaza and unofficial living room — a terraced brick amphitheatre hosting farmers' markets, concerts, and festivals throughout the year. The square features the Weather Machine sculpture that reveals a different figure at noon daily, the iconic Portland sign, and serves as the transit hub where all MAX light rail lines converge.

2. Powell's City of Books

   The largest independent bookstore in the world — occupying an entire city block in the Pearl District with over one million new and used books organized across nine colour-coded rooms on multiple floors. Since 1971, Powell's has been a Portland institution where readers can spend hours browsing rare first editions, bestsellers, and everything in between.

3. Pearl District

   Portland's trendiest neighbourhood — a former industrial warehouse district transformed into a vibrant scene of art galleries, boutique shops, craft breweries, and upscale restaurants. First Thursday art walks draw crowds to dozens of galleries each month, while the Jamison Square fountain and Tanner Springs Park provide urban green spaces among the converted loft buildings.

4. Portland Japanese Garden

   Widely considered the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan — 12 acres of meticulously designed landscapes perched in the West Hills above the city. Eight distinct garden styles include a serene strolling pond, sand and stone garden, natural garden with a waterfall, and the Cultural Village designed by Kengo Kuma with its dramatic floor-to-ceiling views of Mount Hood.

5. International Rose Test Garden

   Home to over 10,000 rose bushes representing 650 varieties — a free public garden established in 1917 to preserve European rose species during World War I. Set on a hillside in Washington Park, the garden offers breathtaking views of Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, and downtown Portland while perfuming the air with hundreds of fragrant varieties from June through October.

6. Pittock Mansion

   A stunning 1914 French Renaissance-style mansion built by Oregonian newspaper publisher Henry Pittock — perched 300 meters above the city in the West Hills. The restored 46-room estate showcases early 20th-century craftsmanship and technology, while the surrounding grounds offer some of the finest panoramic views in Portland spanning from Mount Hood to Mount St. Helens.

7. Hawthorne Bridge

   Cross the Willamette River on the Hawthorne Bridge — the oldest operating vertical-lift bridge in the United States, dating to 1910. The Eastbank Esplanade stretches 2.4 kilometres along the river's east bank, featuring a floating walkway section and connecting to the Vera Katz Esplanade with spectacular views of the downtown skyline and waterfront.

8. A 28-block stretch of Northeast Alberta Street that has become Portland's most vibrant creative corridor — lined with independent galleries, street murals, vintage clothing stores, and some of the city's most inventive restaurants and food carts. Last Thursday art walks transform the street into a festival atmosphere with live music, performers, and open gallery doors.

9. Lan Su Chinese Garden

   An authentic Ming Dynasty-style classical Chinese garden built in collaboration with Portland's sister city of Suzhou — enclosed within whitewashed walls in the heart of Old Town Chinatown. The garden features hand-carved serpentine rockeries, a central lake with pavilions, 500 species of plants, and a traditional teahouse serving Chinese teas and dim sum.

10. St. Johns Bridge

    Portland's most beautiful bridge — a stunning 1931 Gothic suspension bridge with 120-meter towers soaring above the Willamette River. Beneath its towering arches, Cathedral Park spreads along the riverbank, its name inspired by the cathedral-like ribbed vaulting created by the bridge supports overhead. A beloved spot for picnics, weddings, and contemplation.

11. Multnomah Falls

    Oregon's tallest waterfall and the most-visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest — a breathtaking 189-meter cascade plunging in two tiers down a basalt cliff face in the Columbia River Gorge. The iconic Benson Bridge spans the falls at the midpoint, while the steep trail to the summit offers panoramic views of the Gorge stretching toward the Cascades.
