What you get

    About this experience

This physically demanding tour is built for fit travelers who want to go deeper into the mountains. You’ll hike 4–6 miles with 1,500–1,800 feet of elevation gain on unimproved trails and off-trail routes while exploring forested river areas, brushy sub-alpine tundra, and beautiful alpine tundra with glacial features. The tour is still fully narrated and interpretive, but with more time on the ground to experience the full range of ecosystems and scenery. Note: We often operate just outside Denali National Park on public and remote lands, allowing access to a wider variety of terrain. You will be dropped off at the train depot in time for the 12:30 pm departure.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Denali National Park

Walking with an experienced local naturalist is really a great way to see the complicated connections of plants, animals, and people within the splendor of true wilderness in Alaska. The boreal forest in the lower elevations gives way to specialized sub arctic ecosystems like taiga and tundra. Hike covers more ground but a little shorter in duration. Expect to cover 4-6 miles and climb up 1500-1800' in elevation. *Note, this tour often operates in areas just outside the National Park so we may explore the mountains off-trail and utilize locations that are more remote and have a wider variety of terrain to explore. We can drop you off at the train depot in time for the 12:30pm train departure.

    Hiking Denali backcountyy

Heli-hiking the most beautiful country ever, with possibly the most informed naturalist EVER! Ottmers knows his stuff, but more importantly he makes YOU excited to learn all you can! His passion for Alaska is obvious and infectious… Got to do this remarkable hike with family and a special friend which made this truly a magical experience. My advice to anyone considering this trip: DO IT!!!! Your soul will thank you.💖

Response from the operator: Thank you, we appreciate this feedback. Jeff loves what he does!

    Hiking in the wilderness

Our guide was Eric and he was absolutely fantastic! Our family of 5 told him we wanted something unique and adventurous and he delivered. He took us on a lightly traveled trail that really made us feel like we were in the wilderness, he identified all the flowers we encountered, and he taught us to interpret Arctic ground squirrel calls. Our hike with him was a highlight of our trip.

    Hiking with an experienced Naturalist

Beautiful surroundings. Confident guide with vast experience. Opportunities to engage with nature. Our guide, Alex made us feel comfortable and confident with the possibility of encountering wildlife. We came upon a mother moose with her young and it was an amazing experience. Our guide was such a wealth of information and shared a lot of interesting insights about the plants and animals in the area.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your reveiw! So pleased you enjoyed your time hiking with us!

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
