Worst Train Torture I have ever endured. Why can't the USA get train travel right?
OMG. This is the slowest train in the world. What was supposed to be a 7.5 hr train ride, already a very long trip, turned into an almost 9 hr train ride which subsequently led to us missing our flight out of Anchorage to home. The ride was interminable. We were constantly stopping for other trains to pass, for crew changes (TWICE) and the commentary over he intercom pointing out points of interest or wildlife was amatuerish and annoying. Don't even get me started at getting our bags back at the end of the ride. They bring these to the drop off point and basically just dump them in a big pile, with no rhyme or reason, people are jostling and pushing and everyone is already in a terrible mood from being trapped on this train for half a day. It was a nightmare. They need some sort of system in terms of the luggage. We were really frustrated by this experience. Helpful tip #1: You can check your bags at the Visitor Center in Denali if you want to look around, hike a bit before your train ride. DO THIS! There are spots within your train car where you can store your larger luggage, then you stay in control. This precludes you from being a part of the luggage fiasco at the end of your train ride. If we had done this, we would have made our 10:30pm flight. Mind you, our train should have been at the station at 8pm (on schedule). We didn't get into the station until after 9pm and then the luggage put us at well past 9:30pm. Helpful tip #2: Pack food. The food on the train is minimal and overpriced. Helpful tip #3: If you want to experience the train, take it one way only and use a bus service for the return. We rode it both ways and now we hate ourselves for this choice.

Gold Star is the way to go!
We opted for the Gold Star service. Highly recommend for the view and service. Every employee was accommodating. Aracella was fantastic!

Gold Star Option
We had such a great experience with the Wilderness Express Dome train from Fairbanks to Denali we decided to upgrade our Adventure Class tickets from Denali to Anchorage. Unfortunately, the Wilderness Express Dome train tickets were sold out so we decided to try the Alaska RR Gold Star service, which also uses Domed train cars. The seats and sights were comparable to the Wilderness Dome. The wait and bar staffs were also friendly. But the narration was poor, mainly due to a terrible sound system and the meals weren't even close in quality. Great sight, could be a lot better standards.

Dirty Dome Car Windows Made This a 0/10 Trip.
You pay a lot of money for Goldstar class, so the last thing I expected was a car with dirty windows. The film of muck was so bad that in order to take any photos you had to head back to the viewing platform! Very disappointing and a complete 0/10, given that there had been no rain. Onboard food was poor. You don’t pay all that money to get a McDonalds equivalent for lunch, and the “hotpot” for dinner was two slices of fall apart overcooked beef, with mashed potatoes and a few half cooked carrots. Bar service from our Serbian barman was attentive. The onboard narration was poor quality and repetitive, and delivered in an annoying squeaky voice through a poor quality sound system. Poor value for money!

Take the Gold Star option - it’s worth it!!
This was the 2nd leg of our train ride trip from Fairbanks to Anchorage. We spent 2 nights in Denali and then got back on the train for the long ride to Anchorage. The 8 hours went by faster than expected and the weather wasn’t great but still we had lots to see. There are announcements and highlights given along the way. We had lunch and dinner (Gold Star) and they were not only delicious but also filling. We were barely hungry at dinner time. The train pulled in a little late and we had ordered an Uber but he had left so we walked to the Hotel from the Anchorage train depot. The bags took a short time to reach the bag area and the walk was not bad after sitting all day. The Gold Star seating is wonderful (upstairs with large seats and table tops like an airplane, domed glass above us and much larger than the other less expensive seating. Definitely opt for Gold Star reservations! 2 Drink tix are included per person as well.
