What you'll see and do

  1. Corgialenios Istoriko kai Laografiko Mouseio

The Korgialenio Historical and Folklore Museum studies and promotes urban and rural life in all its forms (clothing, home economy, family and social life, folk art, leisure, etc.), but also the ecclesiastical art and worship life of the Kefalonians. Finally, he refers to the pre-earthquake architecture and urban planning, the catastrophes of the 1953 earthquake and the reconstruction, while he pays tribute to prominent personalities, Kefalonians and not, who sealed the local history with their actions.

  2. The sinks of Argostoli have been considered another "mystery" by many of Kefalonia. At the edge of the Argostoli Peninsula the sea penetrates the land and flows into sinkholes. The phenomenon has long troubled scientists. In 1963, geologists Viktor Maurin and Josef Zötl of the University of Graz threw 160 kilograms of paint into one of the sinks. Two weeks later traces of color were found in springs on the other side of the island, 14 km away, as well as in the Melissani lake cave. The sinks are nothing more than karstic gaps through which the waters of the rivers that flow into the polga are drained. The strange thing is that the sinks of Argostoli are a system of crevices that are located at a lower level than the sea surface and constantly receive its waters with momentum, a kind of coastal abyss with a constant inflow of sea water. Many scientists claim that fresh water descends underground from Ainos, it is estimated that 1,000 cubic meters per 24 hours, are lost.

  3. Monastery of Agios Gerasimos

Agios Gerasimos is the patron saint of Kefalonia. The new church was built after the earthquake of 1953. Inside it are kept the relics of the saint in a silver sarcophagus. He died on August 15, 1579, but the name day is celebrated on August 16. It is also celebrated on October 20 because when his tomb was opened in October 1851, his body was intact. He was buried again and the tomb was reopened on August 20, 1852, but his remains were still intact. Inside the old church, there is the entrance to the sanctuary of the saint. It has access through a medium-sized opening, but strangely everyone can go through it regardless of size. It is also noteworthy that although visitors need to kneel while in the sanctuary, there is a theory that they do not get dirty from the muddy floor.Due to the saint's popularity, this church is a world place of worship and many people gather every year to honor the memory of the saint. His body is open to the public five times a year.

  4. Drogarati Cave

Drogarati Cave is one of the biggest and most beautiful natural sights in the area around Sami and of all of Kefalonia. It’s at a short distance from the lake-cave of Melissani, belonging to the same geographical region. It was discovered about 300 years ago, when during a big earthquake, part of it collapsed and revealed what is today the entrance of the cave.
