    Great excursion for Mayan experience!

This was a great excursion to do on our 30th anniversary. Even though it was a last minute plan, the Pixan team were very responsive and accommodating. We were picked up in Puerto Morales and spent the day with Felipe (driver) and Diego our guide. They did an excellent job and were fun to spend the day with! We enjoyed the jungle setting and shade of ancient Coba, explored a cave style cenote, and had a delicious and memorable lunch prepared by a kind Mayan family. Highly recommended!

    Highly recommend this tour!

Coba was amazing. The location in the jungle provides shade and was not crowded. However a guide is necessary to get the most from the visit. Our guide, Josh, was excellent. From the very beginning, our pickup was on time. Offered snacks and water. Josh provided an excellent history of the Yucatán area along our way. Once we arrived, Josh began our tour. He was so knowledgeable about the Mayan history and shared all the details about Mayan life as we toured the ruins. It was fascinating. He answered all questions with tremendous insight. We chose to travel through the grounds by bike which was fun. Highly recommend! Following Coba, we travelled to a Mayan home for an authentic lunch. Only for our family! We all agreed this was the highlight of the trip. Carlos and Nadia welcomed us to their home and prepared an excellent meal in the Mayan tradition. We even sat with her to make tortillas! Carlos is a Shaman and blessed our arrival and meal. The food was delicious! Wonderful to observe the traditional cooking methods. Underground fire and stone stove. They were gracious and obviously proud of their heritage. Following lunch, we travelled to a Cenote for a swim. Wonderful to cool off in the beautiful water underground. Very peaceful. The cavern is amazing. In summary, we highly recommend this private tour. The itinerary is unique and an excellent way to explore Mayan culture avoiding the heat and crowds. Thank you Josh and Felipe!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for this amazing and thoughtful review! 🧡 We’re beyond happy to hear that your day with us was such a memorable one. Josh and Felipe had a blast showing your family around Coba and beyond—Josh is a walking encyclopedia of Mayan history (and a total gem of a guide), so we’re glad you enjoyed his insights! We’re especially touched that the visit to Carlos and Nadia’s home stood out to you. They truly put their hearts into every meal and every welcome. Sitting down to make tortillas and share stories is one of the most beautiful ways to connect cultures—and we’re honored you got to experience that. Thanks again for trusting us with your adventure and for taking the time to share it. Big hugs from the whole Pixan crew—we hope to welcome you back for more magic one day! 🌿🌮✨

    Mayan Ruins Tour

This was our second trip with Diego. We liked him so much the first trip, we made sure to find him again a couple years later. He is very knowledgeable about the history and culture of the area and can talk at any level to keep it interesting. He was attentive to the group’s needs and made sure we had a great time.

Response from the operator: Thank you for coming back to us for your second trip with Diego! We’re so glad to hear that you enjoyed your first experience so much that you wanted to reconnect. Diego’s passion for the history and culture really makes each tour unique, and it’s wonderful to hear that he made sure your experience was just as great as the first. Looking forward to having you on another adventure soon!

    Fabulous Family Mayan Memories

Diego shared so much Mayan history and accentuated the info using a I pad to share maps and graphics . Even our teenagers were captivated! The Talum ruins, bike ride through the jungle in Coba, and a purifying dip in a gorgeous cenote set us up for a delicious traditional Mayan lunch. Our family of 9 will cherish this adventure. We love Pixan Travels support of the contemporary Mayan community.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your glowing review! We're thrilled Diego's expertise and interactive approach enriched your journey through Mayan history. It's wonderful to hear your family enjoyed Tulum, Coba's jungle bike ride, and a refreshing cenote dip, topped off with a delicious traditional Mayan lunch. Supporting the contemporary Mayan community is a privilege for us. We look forward to more adventures with your family!

What should I bring or wear?

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Playa del Carmen?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Playa del Carmen?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
