What you'll see and do

  1. Fuxing Park

Stroll through the sunken gardens and past the grand fountain, you might feel as if you've stepped into Paris rather than Shanghai! Despite a century of wars and social changes, much of the park has been wonderfully preserved. Here, you can witness lively scenes of locals playing the saxophone, practicing Tai Chi, and performing with Chinese yo-yos.

    30 minutes here

  2. Sinan Mansions

Now an upscale neighborhood with ultra-expensive hotels and fancy restaurants. Charming western-style villas scattered in lush green gardens. In the past, it was a residential neighborhood for social elites like top diplomats, lawyers, and generals.

    30 minutes here

  3. Step into a quiet local alley. Locals still reside here-elderly women hang laundry in the passageways, while grandfathers ride their bikes through narrow lanes, picking up their grandchildren from school. It’s a beautiful glimpse of everyday life! You will learn about some fascinating stories of everyday life in China.

    30 minutes here

  4. This place was the former Morris Garden, named after a super-rich family back in the day. The entire block was their private estate, with most of the area covered in greenery. You will stroll through its beautiful grounds and hear how the family climbed up the social ladder.

    30 minutes here

  5. Shaoxing Lu

A quaint narrow street with tunnel of trees. It is also Shanghai’s most "literary" street - it was home to more than half of the city’s publishing houses, as well as local opera houses and bookstores.

    30 minutes here

  6. Tianzifang

A local neighborhood converted into an art district and boutique shops in recent decades. Now TianZiFang is a perfect combination of local residential neighborhood, shops and art crafts studio.

Great guide Alice Liu

We had a wonderful walk around the neighborhood. Alice was a great guide with loads of history context and local knowledge. She even showed us old Shanghai map on her pad. Also very thoughtful arrangement of the itinerary to include a stop at 100-year-old historic cafe for a good rest. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to go beyond the usual beaten track and have a peak into the real Shanghai life and enjoy local charm. Thanks Alice for this great trip ❤️

Response from the operator: Thank you very much. Hope you enjoyed your trip in China!

See the former French concession from the perspective of a local

Fun and informative tour of the former French concession! Rachel is very knowledgeable and friendly. We were lucky to have her share her experiences in Shanghai with us! The group size was perfect, and we even met a kitten at the end of the tour.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your lovely review! So glad you enjoyed a fun, informative tour with Rachel and even made a furry little friend along the way. Hope to walk with you again soon!

Great experience, route and guide!

Having travelled to Shanghai for work on previous occasions, I booked for this tour as I was always curious about the history and architecture of this city. Our guide was Max and he was amazing. It was like catching up with a friend who shared with us his stories of growing up as a local. He was able to demystify this city from various perspectives. I really appreciated his ability to share nuanced insights to how the city is evolving. Definitely look for him when doing a tour of his home!

Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review! So glad Max shared such personal, nuanced stories with you and made the tour feel like catching up with an old friend. Hope to welcome you back to Shanghai soon!

Great Walk through History of the French Concession

Sophia and Emma led us on an enjoyable tour through the French Concession. They were informative, answer questions and invited comments and discussion. I appreciated seeing several sides of life in the French Concession, the ultra wealthy foreigners, wealthy Chinese and the everyday citizen caught up in political change.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review! So glad you enjoyed the tour with Sophia and Emma—they shared fascinating insights into different lives and stories in the French Concession. Hope to walk with you again soon!

Excellent!

Sophie was an excellent guide given us all the history and background of the French concession. Also keeping us engaged throughout the tour.

Response from the operator: Haha, Sophie is indeed very knowledgeable! She majored in International Affairs for her bachelor’s degree and can share many in-depth historical stories

Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Shanghai.

How much does Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour cost?

+

Prices start at $39 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Shanghai usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour take?

+

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Shanghai is not rushed.

Is Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 7 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Shanghai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour?

+

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Shanghai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Shanghai and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Charming Shanghai French Concession Mini-group Walking Tour start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Shanghai within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Shanghai?

+

On Outty we rank every Shanghai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Private Shanghai Full Day City Tour with Old and New Highlights, Suzhou Private Day Trip from Shanghai with Bullet Train Option, 4-Hour Flexible Private Shanghai City Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Shanghai?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Shanghai?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
