    Try locals, not a corporation

The guide was reading off her phone. That's not a tour. Zero personality. Not recommended. Couldn't answer questions.

Total waste o time and money

This is the worst ghost tour I have ever been on, and I have been on many.  It was four of us in my group (My group paid extra for an extended tour) and then 3 other people in another group. First, we went to about 4 sites and we were not told a single story about a ghost at any site. We were told about how a statue was torn down and grass won't grow where it was. We were told about KKK robes in a museum that smell like sulfur and we were taken to a house where the person that bought Monticello lived and were told completely wrong information about him, still no ghost story. Finally, we were taken to a cemetery where we were told it's a cometary so it "could" be haunted. That was 37 minutes into what was supposed to be a 1 hour tour. Well, once we got to the cemetery, the people in the other group were told their tour was over (At this point I was wishing I didn't pay extra and would have loved leaving with other group). Then the guide left them in the cemetery to find their own way back. After that we were unfortunately off to the extended tour, which was supposed to be four additional sites. The first she took us to was a house where a woman was murdered and her husband was arrested for the murder. As I am sure you can guess by now, still no ghost. Then she took us to the court house where the husband was convicted and sentenced to death. Still not a ghost. Then that was it. We only saw 2 out four additional sites, not the four we paid for. I would also like to point out or Tour guide was not walking with us either. She walked so fast we had to practically run to keep up. then at the end she just left us on a random street and we had to find our way back to the car. It was a complete waste of time and money but did give us something to laugh at. If you really want to hear ghost stories on your ghost tour you may want to find a different company.

We wasted our time, not to mention money

We have experienced several of these 'ghost' tours over the years. Usually they are started by people with a real feel for their city and its haunted history. They have lived here, researched and bring to the tour a lot of information they have gathered. A recent trend has been for a chain to come into a city, google some information, hire someone to give tours regardless of abiltiy or interest, undercut any rivals and take over. This tour in Charlottesville left a lot to be desired. A lot of walking. Very little information about the city, and the 'haunted' parts were lame. We walked blocks to a cemetery for no reason, other than to walk into a cemetery. No grave to talk about some person who lived or died here, just some conjecture about what these people might have done. I hate to give bad reviews and usually sugarcoat any bad experiences, but I can't honestly do this one.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We sincerely apologize that the Charlottesville tour did not meet your expectations. We understand your concerns regarding the pacing, the information provided, and the overall experience, and we truly regret that it fell short of the high standard we aim to provide. Please reach out to guestrelations@tourismo.com with the name your booking was under, and we’ll be happy to assist you further and address your concerns. We appreciate your honest feedback, as it helps us improve for future guests.

    Ghost tour

It contained a lot of history. Our finally destination was in a cemetery and it was very dark. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and sweet

Response from the operator: Thank you! We’re happy you enjoyed the historical aspect of the tour and appreciated the guide’s sweet and knowledgeable approach. We’ll be sure to share your compliments—hope to see you again for another memorable evening!

    Very average tour

Our guide was very pleasant so no criticism there. The tour itself was average at best. Some of the historical info was incorrect and the tour was more history with ghost stories.

Response from the operator: Thanks for your honest review! We’re happy to hear your guide made a good impression, and we’ll be sure to pass that along. We’re sorry the tour itself felt a bit off, and we appreciate your notes about the historical accuracy. Feedback like yours helps us grow. We’d love another chance to give you a stronger experience.

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Charlottesville.

How much does Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours cost?

    +

Prices start at $26 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Charlottesville usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours take?

    +

Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Charlottesville is not rushed.

Is Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 50 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.3/5 across 21 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Charlottesville, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours?

    +

Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Charlottesville can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Charlottesville and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Chains, Coffins, & Curses: Charlottesville Ghost Tours start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Charlottesville within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Charlottesville?

    +

Charlottesville, VA packs its best experiences into walkable neighborhoods, local food, and day trips nearby. Outty ranks every bookable tour and activity in Charlottesville by rating quality, review depth, booking demand and value, so you can see the standouts before you book. On Outty we rank every Charlottesville experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Virginia Private Custom Wine Tour from Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour, Private Charlottesville Area Wine Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Charlottesville?

    +

Spring and fall bring the best weather and lighter crowds in Charlottesville, while summer has the widest choice of tours and evening activities. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Charlottesville?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
