Avoid This Excursion — Multiple Upcharges and Broken Promises

My girlfriend and I booked this excursion while on vacation in Mexico. We both work long shifts as a firefighter and police officer, so we were really looking forward to having a relaxing day and enjoying our vacation. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of the biggest disappointments of our trip. We originally paid about $90 for two people online. When we arrived at the meeting location, we were told that we were booked on a family boat and that we would have a much better experience on the adults-only boat. We were convinced to pay an additional $70 to upgrade. The salesperson specifically told us that after arriving at Isla Mujeres, we would have at least four hours of free time to explore the island on our own. He strongly encouraged us to rent a golf cart and told us we could drive around ourselves, explore the beaches and shops, and go wherever we wanted. He even told us that the best beach was on the north side of the island. This was exactly what my girlfriend was excited about doing, so we agreed to the upgrade. We were then charged another $90 in port fees. Once we got on the boat, we were excited because we thought we were going to have several hours to explore Isla Mujeres. The workers came around and asked who wanted to reserve a golf cart. I paid another $60, which seemed reasonable based on what we had been told. However, once we arrived at the island, things changed completely. We were told we couldn’t use the golf carts yet and had to wait for over an hour. When they finally became available, we were told we couldn’t take the golf cart wherever we wanted. Instead, we were required to follow a tour leader on another golf cart, along with roughly 15 other golf carts from the same excursion. We spent less than an hour riding around and were required to return the golf cart. We only traveled a few miles and were taken to an area that, based on what had been promised to us, we never would have chosen to spend our limited time visiting. We were not allowed to stop and explore the beaches or shops we had specifically been told we could visit. The entire reason we paid extra for the adults-only boat and golf cart was to have the freedom to explore the island on our own. Instead, we ended up following a large group on a slow, controlled tour. What was especially frustrating was that the expectations were clearly set before we paid. We were told we would have several hours of free time, that we could explore the island ourselves, and that the golf cart would allow us to do exactly that. None of that happened. In the end, what should have been a $90 excursion for two people turned into approximately $310, before tips: * $90 original excursion * $70 adults-only upgrade * $90 port fees * $60 golf cart With tips, we spent approximately $350. For that amount of money, we expected the experience we were promised. Instead, we spent much of the day waiting, being restricted to a group tour, and being unable to do the activities we were specifically sold on. The biggest issue isn’t that we didn’t enjoy the excursion. It’s that we paid extra based on specific promises that were not honored. We would have never paid the additional money if we had been told beforehand that the golf cart would be part of a guided group tour and that we would have very limited time and freedom on the island. We left feeling completely misled and extremely disappointed. I would strongly recommend getting exact details in writing about what is actually included and how much free time you will have before paying for any upgrades or additional activities.

    Big rip-off!

Big rip-off! The food was disgusting, and the second beach was dirty, but the worst part was the customer service when I first arrived. I arrived over an hour early to make sure I had plenty of time, but we were completely ignored. When someone finally helped us, the woman assisting us was rude and nasty. She repeatedly misspelled my name, even after I corrected her several times. She then told me, “This is how we pronounce your name in Mexico.” My name is not a Spanish name, and I told her that she should have the basic decency to pronounce someone’s name correctly after being corrected. Aside from the staff onboard the catamaran, the entire experience was terrible. The alcohol was disgusting, the food was awful, and the whole thing felt like a complete money grab. Definitely not worth the price.

    Great daytrip

We bought the basic package, read the small print so we knew we had to pay an additional $50 p/p at port, however just like the other reviews we we're offered a platinum upgrade which was totally worth it! We went on a VIP type of catamaran with like 15 people, very attentive staff, drinks kept coming, weather was perfect, we enjoyed the snorkeling, and food was very good, mexican cuisine.

    Loved the Catamaran experience!

It was a fun experience having with Team Ezekiel, Team Isah on photos and rest of the crew of Aviator 4! Such an amazing time and all crew were so helpful and attentive! They guided us with the island muneres tour upon arrival and then open buffet for lunch and island shopping at North Playa. With kids with us on this trip, some were a little bit dizzy on the ride but had a good resting shaded area at the back of the boat, nonetheless upon arrival to the island, they all enjoyed the golf cart tour around Isla Mujeres and the swim at the beach after, would like to stay more at the beach front by the buffet rather than heading to the other area for shopping as the kids prefer to swim more, but over all a good experience.

Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cancun.

How much does Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch cost?

    +

Prices start at $35 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cancun usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch take?

    +

Plan for about 8.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cancun is not rushed.

Is Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.9/5 across 291 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cancun, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch?

    +

Around 102 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cancun can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cancun and add a light layer if any part of the 8.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Catamaran to Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour with Open Bar and Lunch start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cancun within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cancun?

    +

On Outty we rank every Cancun experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Early Access to Chichen Itza All Inclusive with Valladolid and Cenote Swim, Whale Shark Tour from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Riviera Maya, Small-Group 3 Hidden Cenotes Adventure with Tequila Tasting. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cancun?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cancun?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
