Brunch on Mississippi Food Tour

A Little Boozy, A Lotta Brunchy, A Load of Fun

Who doesn't love brunch? And when someone else has chosen delicious items, has ordered them for you and entertains you while you eat & walk from place to place? Even better! And Sherry from Portland By Mouth does all of that. And more. What a fun way to spend a few hours. We tried 6 (or 7?) yummy brunch-y foods, had a cocktail, got in some leisurely exercise and heard fabulous stories about food and Portland and popped into some interesting little shops. Sherry chose just the right items, and my husband & I have returned to several of the places--and we have only lived here a month! We have done two tours with this company and cannot wait to do the third.

Very much worth it!

Fantastic experience! The stops, offerings and sequence were curated, but it was decidedly not the sort of food tour with special miniature samples in portion cups to pass around. It was real food, substantial, and in a number of cases we had choices. But as good as the food was, the history, anecdotes and banter made this next level. The length (three-ish hours) gave me pause when I first read up on this tour, but the time flew by in a most enjoyable way. Very much worth it!

Great Experience - Local History & Good Food

My sister and I vacation together every year, and we always do a food tour to get familiar with all the options in our location. We connected with Sherri and knew immediately she was knowledgeable and familiar with Portland. During our stay, there was a ton of smoke from wildfires in both Oregon and Washington, and Sherri was kind enough to check in with us to make sure we were ok still taking the tour. We were! And we lucked out that we were her only customers that day. We started at Broder Nord, a sweet breakfast stop, which was our meeting point. The abelskievers were delish and the Lingonberry Lemonade was fresh and tasty. Our next stop was Fried Egg I'm In Love. On the way, Sherri gave us valuable information on local history and more. But back to the Fried Egg! WOW! We loved the whole vibe there. It started as a food cart and ended up being so popular that the creators took the idea of 80s rock & roll and made it into a destination. We tried the Yolko Ono, which was amazing. I had mine without the pesto, and it was perfection. All the menu items are a play on words using song titles and artists from the era. Very clever idea! On our way to our next food experience, we stopped at the Rebuilding Center, which is full of salvaged and discarded items for reuse. The entire building is made from items people were done with, and it looks amazing! Then we found ourselves at Mississippi Food Carts, a gathering place of the locals with choices from cocktails to brisket to eggs, and more. The BBQ brisket from Matt's BBQ was the best I've ever tasted! We then visited Paxton Gate, a very interesting shop full of taxidermy, bug specimens, and more unusual items to be astonished by. After a small detour around the neighborhood to view Victorian houses and more history, we ended our tour at Tipsy Scoop Barlour, an ice cream parlor with an alcohol twist. The choices were numerous, but I ended up with a boozy chocolate fudge ice cream that was so chocolately and boozy that I wanted more! All in all we had an amazing morning and would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Portland!

Inviting and Educational

My husband & I were gifted a food tour through “Portland by Mouth” from our daughter. We’re very familiar with all of the offered neighborhoods except N. Mississippi, so that’s the one we chose for a brunch excursion. Sherri was already waiting at our first stop, and took charge from there. Most of the food was prearranged at each restaurant, which kept it simple, but sometimes we could choose from a few options. The portions were small, but we had plenty to eat by the end of the tour. I was pleasantly surprised that Sherri also took us into other shops along the way between food stops. She was very knowledgeable about the community and the owners of each business. This neighborhood walk was very easy, and Sherri stopped frequently to point out unique features along the way that we might not have noticed otherwise. It was so interesting to hear all of the stories and sample the local fare. It just made us want to return another day and explore even more on our own. A big shout out to Sherri for learning about us, too, and tailoring the trip and conversations especially for us! I highly recommend the brunch tour in the sweet N. Mississippi neighborhood. It’s easily accessible by public transportation, which is our vibe, and there’s also plenty of street parking available.

Food gave us joy and knowledge

Sherri was great! She gave us insights to the foods, chefs, their back stories and communicated knowledge about the city and the neighborhood. We visited non food establishments, as well, really making the experience wonderful.
