About this experience
The Yucatan Peninsula is recognized as a very important area with an enormous diverse bird population due to its strategic location for migratory birds. Too there is a rich resident population. To date, 543 species have been viewed in the Yucatan Peninsula, representing nearly 50% of all the bird species registered in the country. You will travel the Muyil area with an expert local-bird & wildlife guide and a small number of fellow travelers. This tour distills the best of the Yucatán into a trip that takes in the mature semi-deciduous jungle and some fresh water wetlands. Moises was an exceptional guide
Moises was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide, and we saw some fantastic birds. When we met, he checked my level of birding experience and asked what I wanted from the tour- and absolutely delivered. We saw quite a few toucans, orioles, hummingbirds, jays, and other beautiful birds. Moises’ enthusiasm was energising, and he took great photos that he shared. The first part of the tour (where the most birds were) was in a semi-urban area near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve (it was also earliest part of the day) and then we moved to the reserve itself which has a lovely boardwalk though the jungle. There is a MXN 100 fee for entrance to the reserve and parking.

A must for birders in Tulum
We first contacted Antonio about the Sunset Kayak Tour, which we did on day 2 of arriving in Tulum and I cannot recommend Antonio and his team enough. The communications initially via email (switched to Whatsapp) were great. They were useful and helped us organise our logistics (even sorted us a ride home with a family after the trip to save the 3km hike) The trip itself was amazing and we saw lots of pelicans, cormorants, frigatbirds, egrets, multiple species of heron, ibis and more (sadly not the season for spoonbills) But we were lucky enough to see ospreys and black hawks as well as many other species, and Antonio knew how much seeing an Osprey would mean to myself and my wife and made it his mission to help us find one - and he did!!!!!! Then we were so impressed with Antonio that we decided to book the birdwatching in the Sian Ka'an Reserve, and if you are a birder this is a must. Antonio was joined by his two friends and fellow bird experts, and helped us identify over 40 species with some amazing highlights including the keel-throathed toucan, pygmy kingfisher, green jay and black headed mot mot. Antonio and his team were friendly and pleasant throughout and their passion for the natural world as well as their pride of their local area made it an unforgettable experience and if any birders are considering it, I cannot recommend it enough. They even shared some amazing photos with us afterwards and really went above and beyond to make it an incredible experience. Thank you again Antonio and we will for sure be contacting you again when we are next in the area!!!!

Birding around Tulum
Yucatan Outdoors made sure that I had the right resources and people to see good birds in several different locations outside Tulum. They tailored the program to meet my schedule.

Really great experience. Would recommend.
We really enjoyed this tour. We saw some magnificent birds right from the the start. If you don't already have eBird or the Merlin bird ID app, I recommend those to keep track of all the different species. We saw over 40 different kinds of birds. Our guide was very knowledgable and helpful for spotting and IDing birds, but also the surrounding area, people and culture. We went for lunch at the end (not included in tour) as the perfect way to end the outing and talk about all the birds we saw.
Response from the operator: “Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re thrilled that you enjoyed the tour and spotted so many incredible birds. eBird and Merlin are indeed great tools for birdwatching, and we’re glad you found them helpful. It was a pleasure having you on the tour, and we appreciate your enthusiasm for both the wildlife and the local culture. We hope to see you again for another adventure in Sian Ka’an!” 🦉

Why this scores 57
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tulum.
How much does Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve cost?
+
Prices start at $130 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tulum usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tulum is not rushed.
Is Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 9 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tulum, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tulum can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tulum and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Birdwatching Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tulum within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Tulum?
+
On Outty we rank every Tulum experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tulum Ruins, Turtles in Akumal and Cenote tour, Tulum Guided Tour, Magical Cenote, Lagoon Snorkeling and Beachside Lunch, Chichén Itzá, Cenote and Valladolid with Lunch and transportation. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Tulum?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Tulum?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
