About this experience
Both these legendary cities were buried by the same eruption of 79 AD. In this half-day tour you will understand that there are many differences between Pompeii and Herculaneum. We will start to see the most important public buildings that the archaeologists found in Pompeii. In Herculaneum, we will instead investigate the private buildings. We'll also explain the differences of the eruption that buried the two cities and that permits to see in Pompeii the plaster casts and in Herculaneum the carbonized wood of two thousand years ago.

Private tour Pompeii and Herculaneum
Our guide, Francesco, was so knowledgeable and a lovely guy. We enjoyed both tours (Pompeii and Herculaneum).

Fantastic day!
Roberto was a wonderful guide - so knowledgeable. We got so much more out of the visit than we would have on our own. A fabulous experience. Highly recommend him!
via Tripadvisor
An excellent guide - we couldn’t ask for more.
We had a fabulous tour of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Roberto was an excellent guide - his English near perfect and his knowledge exceptional. He explained so much detail to us , setting the scene, the geography and what happened on the day of the volcanic eruption. It was fascinating. All our questions were answered and without doubt - when we return to the area to explore more of Pompeii we will without doubt make contact with Roberto to guide us again. Thank you Roberto.

An informed and stimulating tour
We spent a wonderful day with Roberto on this stimulating tour of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Roberto is an expert archeologist and this was obvious throughout the tour. The baths in particular were overwhelming and the original medallion covered ceiling was awe inspiring. The tour was adjusted to our needs and Roberto even arranged for a car and wonderful driver (Diego) to pick us up at our hotel and drive us to Herculaneum and Pompeii. This was an exceptional experience and well worth the price.

guide brings Pompeii and Herculaneum alive
After consulting with Roberto to make sure we used our time in the Pompeii area wisely, we toured the Archaeological ruins of Pompeii and the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum. We broke these tours into different days and thoroughly enjoyed each. Walked away with more information and insight than ever imagined. After the Herculaneum tour, Roberto encouraged us to take a drive to the Almafi coast. He provided town points that created a loop to the Almafi coast and back to Pompei. What an incredible drive. We would not have been able to do this without the expert assistance from a local person. The consultation was key to pur incredible visit.

Why this scores 53
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Pompeii.
How much does Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist cost?
+
Prices start at $600 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Pompeii usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Pompeii is not rushed.
Is Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 53 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 19 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in Pompeii, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist?
+
Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Pompeii can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Pompeii and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Best of Pompeii & Herculaneum: Private Tour with an Archaeologist start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Pompeii within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Pompeii?
+
On Outty we rank every Pompeii experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Premium Minivan Trip from Rome: Pompeii Tour & Lunch in Sorrento, Skip the Line Guided Tour of Pompeii Led by an Archaeologist, Explore Pompeii with an Archaeologist. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Pompeii?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Pompeii?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
