    About this experience

Join us for an epic subterranean adventure deep below the Earth’s surface! Bend is home to a vast amount of lava tube cave networks, that were formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity. During our two hours underground in the darkest, quietest spot the Earth can provide, our naturalist guides will impart their vast knowledge of the region's geology while we adventure through this incredible cave system. Wanderlust Tours is the only guide company permitted in these lava caves. These caves are wild caves, meaning there is no paved path or lighting. Wanderlust Tours will outfit your group with helmets and headlamps. We also recommend wearing hiking boots or sturdy shoes to help navigate the uneven, rocky terrain as well as a fleece jacket and jeans as the caves stay at 45 degrees Fahrenheit year round! These volcanically formed geologic wonders are a truly breathtaking place to explore! ** Please read through the "Additional Info" section for details about the caves difficulty.

A must see when in Bend

The lava tube cave tour was amazing! Our guide, Jose, was so knowledgeable about the area and landscape around the cave. He was patient and answered all questions. You will get dirty crawling through some small spaces along the cave floor but it is so worth it. There are some spots that require climbing over rocks and bending over and kneeling down so having some level of fitness is necessary.

Super fun and well worth it.

Super fun! My 11 year old was nervous about being in a cave. He had the best time. He said he felt totally alive and happy. Jose was a great guide. I highly recommend this activity.

Response from the operator: We're so happy you had an amazing time on tour with us!! Jose is such a passionate guide and so knowledgeable about the caves. Thank you for the kind words and we hope to see you out on tour the next time you're in Bend! Cheers, Jay

Be aware of the difficulty of the lava tube.

We had a very interesting tour of a lava tube with this company. The naturalist was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Oregon geology, the formation of lava tubes, etc. however, I reread the tour description and there's a sneaky phrase at the end that says see additional information for discussion of lava tube. Difficulty. This exploration is difficult. You are climbing over large boulders and the overhead space gets narrower and narrower. With a replacement knee I was unable to continue the tour to the end. This actually worked out okay, allowing us time to slowly hike out of the tube and make more detailed observations than on the way in.

    Fun time!

Fun, physical scramble thru lava cave lead by knowledgeable and considerate guide! Moments of total darkness when we all turned our headlamps off were very peaceful. Seeing bats at rest was beautiful.

    Not worth the money.

This is a terrible experience for an 81 year old person. On the Web Site there is no warning about the climbing, poor footing, or crawling. I recommend this experience to the young and agile. But I certainly wasted some of my retirement money on this.

Response from the operator: Hi, We're very sorry that you didn't enjoy your cave tour with us. While we rate our Lava Tube Cave Tour as moderate in difficulty, we also know that everyone has different ability and comfort levels. In the "Additional Info" section of our tour description we do describe that the cave is a wild cave with no paved path, uneven terrain, rocks to scramble over, and a short crawl. We also recently added more info about the cave's difficulty to the "What to Expect" section. If you are ever worried about the difficulty of a certain tour, it is always best to go directly to our website (wanderlusttours.com) or call our office directly at 541-389-8359. Specifically for our cave tours, we offer an easier caving option during the summer months that is not available through Viator. We know that every guest's understanding of a cave environment differs and we do our best to accurately describe the features they will encounter and again, we are very sorry that the experience was not what you had expected. If you have further feedback or questions, please give our office a call or email us at info@wanderlusttours.com Cheers!

How much does Bend Oregon Guided Lava Tube Cave Tour cost?

How long does Bend Oregon Guided Lava Tube Cave Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Bend is not rushed.

Is Bend Oregon Guided Lava Tube Cave Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 19 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in Bend, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Bend Oregon Guided Lava Tube Cave Tour?

How far in advance should I book Bend Oregon Guided Lava Tube Cave Tour?

    +

Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Bend can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Bend and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

When is the best time to visit Bend?

    +

Spring and fall bring the best weather and lighter crowds in Bend, while summer has the widest choice of tours and evening activities. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Bend?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
