Gorgeous but not with Peru Hike

The hike was gorgeous, but the operator was a disaster. I hike lot, and classifying those as moderate is wrong. It is a challenging trek. Unfortunately the operator provided leaky tents, thin sleeping pads and bags labeled far lower than their actual temp rating. Everyone was cold! Of the ten that started three had to evacuate, and the guide related that on some trips he has been the only finisher. On the fourth and most challenging day there was a problem between the operator and locals that required another 2-3 hours walking to the next campsite.

Highly recommend the Ausangate trek with Peru Hike

I could not recommend this company more highly for the Ausangate trek. We booked the trek very last minute, 2 days before. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of service. Our guide Juan Huaman spoke great English was super friendly and very helpful throughout the trek. Our cook Edgar cooked incredible food all trip and horseman Genaro was super kind. This trip was 10/10 from our eyes and couldn’t have faulted it.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your fantastic review! 😊 We’re thrilled to hear that you had such a memorable Ausangate trek, especially with such a last-minute booking. We truly appreciate your kind words about Juan, Edgar, and Genaro. We’ll be happy to share your compliments with them. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we hope to welcome you again for another adventure in Peru! 🏔️🇵🇪

Great trek but guides lack proper education/training in emergency situations

I did the four-day Ausangate trek and enjoyed every second. The team was incredibly friendly, and I'll miss the high-fives after each pass or upon reaching the campsite for the day. However, I must say I was extremely disappointed with our guide's training. He not only seemed to have little knowledge of the trek, but his lack of knowledge was genuinely dangerous. On the last day, one of the women in the group panicked because she lost contact with the others and became short of breath due to the altitude. Our guide was overwhelmed and didn't know what to do, so the other hikers took it upon themselves to calm her down. He only offered oxygen after we asked for it. Other hikers also had problems with altitude sickness and received no advice or medication like coca leaves from our guide. Despite all this, our guide was friendly and tried his best, but I would still expect that when booking with a tour agency, the guides are specifically trained for emergency situations. A big thank you to Francisco, our horseman, and Edgar, our cook.

Response from the operator: Dear Eva, Thank you for sharing your experience. However, after carefully reviewing our booking and operational records, we discovered that you did not travel with Peru Hike or participate in the Ausangate trek operated by our company. Your trip was booked and operated by another company. We would also like to clarify that our guides are professionally trained and receive annual training specifically focused on high-altitude trekking, first aid, emergency procedures, altitude-related situations, and passenger safety. We take these responsibilities very seriously, particularly on challenging routes such as Ausangate. For this reason, the comments regarding the training and emergency response of “our guide” do not correspond to a service provided by Peru Hike. We therefore sincerely ask you to remove this review from our listing, as it refers to another company and could unfairly mislead travelers about our services. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Stunning - a truly unforgettable trek - just do it!!

A truly magical & unique experience in the most beautiful and unforgettable landscape. Day 1 felt like a tough walk given the altitude but we were rewarded with beautiful views of Ausangate, stunning remote landscapes and catching glimpses of local people watching over their alpacas. Our campsite was in the most stunning and remote location. Our team were amazing. The boys are incredibly strong carrying all the food/ camping equipment and were always happy and smiling . The food was plentiful and delicious. Our guide was very helpful, informative and took good care of us ensuring our pace was appropriate. We were delighted to crawl into our sleeping bags after dinner and the hot water bottle was hugely appreciated. Be prepared for cold, the weather can feel brutally cold and changeable. We were woken at 5am with a very welcome coca tea before breakfast. After a 30-40 minute uphill walk we were rewarded with the most stunning views of rainbow mountain and we had the whole place to ourselves. We were blessed with perfect weather and the colours are simply breathtaking of the mountains and red valley. After doing Salkantay, Machu Picchu and the sacred valley we felt absolutely privileged to experience the tranquility and isolation that this trek offers.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your incredibly detailed and wonderful review! 😊 We’re truly happy to know that you enjoyed the landscapes, the remote campsites, the food, and the experience with our entire team. We especially appreciate your kind words about our porters and guide. We’re glad their dedication and care helped make your trek comfortable and memorable. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we hope to welcome you again on another adventure in Peru! 🏔️🇵🇪

    Magical experience

Magical experience hiking the Ausangate trek in March of 2026. We had a small group and didn't see any other tourists the whole time which was a very special experience. Every single meal was different and the food was exceptional. Our guide Gilthon was relaxed, helpful and kind. Over the 4 days the landscape changed so much, it truly felt like I was in a special world. One recommendation I would make is that each tent/sleeping bag/mat is labeled with the name of the individual using it for the duration of the trip or for example #1= Tom; #2=Scott, #3=Vanessa etc... I think our stuff was mixed up by day 3. Only that could be improved.

Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cusco.

How much does Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive cost?

    +

Prices start at $690 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cusco usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive take?

    +

Plan for about 120 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cusco is not rushed.

Is Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 72 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 23 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cusco, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 120-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive?

    +

Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cusco can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cusco and add a light layer if any part of the 120-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Ausangate Trek And Rainbow Mountain 5 Days - All Inclusive start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cusco within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cusco?

    +

On Outty we rank every Cusco experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sacred Valley Full Day Tour, Full-Day Humantay Lake Trek (Meals Included), Cusco: Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Premium Day Trip with Meals. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cusco?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cusco?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
