Hearty hike to unrestored portion of the Great Wall and Summer Palace walking tour

Our guide, Peter, was wonderful on this adventure. Started out with an easy hotel pickup in a new car, travel 90 minutes to a rural area for the start of an hour long steep hike up to the unrestored part of the Great Wall, an hour climbing around the sections of the wall, hiking down for 30 minutes before a fantastic place for lunch, with a Summer Palace walking tour to wrap up the day before hotel drop off. We felt safe the entire time but wished we had brought hiking boots as the hike was on rocky ground and very steep. Peter brought hiking poles for us and they were extremely helpful as well as water for us to drink for all the exertion. I was hoping to see the wall go into the water at Huanghuacheng, but we did not see the lake or a restored section of the wall on this trip. The Summer Palace was stunning and another tour guide, Sue, came along to share facts about the location with us. The food was AMAZING and we enjoyed the adventure!

Response from the operator: Thank You for Your Wonderful Review! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed and thoughtful feedback about your recent "Wild Wall Hiking & Summer Palace" tour with us. We are absolutely thrilled to read that you had an enjoyable and memorable adventure! It brings us great joy to hear your kind words about Peter. His dedication to providing a safe, engaging, and seamless experience is a hallmark of his guiding style, and we're delighted that his preparedness—from the convenient hotel pickup and comfortable vehicle to the hiking poles and water—made a positive difference during the challenging hike. Your acknowledgment means the world to him and our team. We are also glad that Sue's knowledgeable insights at the Summer Palace added depth to your visit. Combining the raw, historic grandeur of the unrestored Great Wall with the elegant beauty of the Summer Palace is precisely the unique contrast we aim to deliver, and we're so pleased it resonated with you. And thank you for the special shout-out about the AMAZING food! We work closely with our local partners to ensure a authentic and satisfying culinary experience, so your compliments are truly appreciated. We also sincerely thank you for your constructive suggestions—they are invaluable in helping us improve: • Regarding hiking boots: You make an excellent point. The terrain on the unrestored sections is indeed rugged and steep. Based on your feedback, we have immediately updated our pre-tour information and packing list to strongly recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots for this tour, ensuring future guests are better prepared for the trail. • Regarding Huanghuacheng ("Water Great Wall"): We understand the curiosity about seeing the wall meet the water. Please note that the itinerary you joined is specifically designed to showcase the "wild," unrestored sections of the Wall, focusing on a more adventurous hiking experience and raw historical atmosphere, which differs from the scenery at Huanghuacheng. We do offer other tours that feature different sections, and we would be happy to recommend one that includes Huanghuacheng for your next visit! Your sense of safety and overall enjoyment throughout the day is our highest priority. Thank you once again for choosing us for your Great Wall exploration and for your generous praise. We hope to have the pleasure of guiding you on another adventure in the future, perhaps to the Huanghuacheng section or another of China's many wonders! Warm regards, The Great Wall Trekclub Team

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 9-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Beijing?

    +

On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Beijing?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
