Alcatraz Inside Access Ferry and Audio Tour with Night Option

Very disappointed

I was VERY disappointed to find that I couldn’t switch my ticket time after I purchased them. My family and I were meeting up in San Francisco for the weekend. So I purchased the tickets. Some family was coming in later than expected because of work obligations. So I tried to moved ticket times out and my request was denied.

Audio Tour of Alcatraz Prison was Outstanding

Really surprised the average rating on TripAdvisor is so low for this. Our trip was excellent- easily 5*. Smooth ferry ride over, we missed our slot but that was no problem, we were allowed to go on the next one which was only 30 mins later. Audio tour of the prison was exceptional - you hear from guards, inmates and original settlers on their views and experiences of Alcatraz. An absolute must to do this if you are visiting San Francisco.

SCAM. This is a scam, we got charged 3 times the real ticket value, don’t fall for it, buy directly.

Alcatraz. August 2026

Lots of walking. They do have a tram to get you to the top. Once you’re there walking is on level ground. Little expensive unless you’re a history buff.

Actual tour is great, but Trip Advisor description is misleading and charging convenience fee might not be allowed

Please note that this tour is operated by the National Park Service (NPS) a federal agency, all who go on the tour are treated the same. In other words, everyone on the island gets an Audio tour, nothing special added by Trip Advisor (TA). It is also a fact that the last boat leaves the island at 6pm, therefore "Night Option" I don't know what that means and just confuses customers. TA might add this as a way to think their tour is special, but it is a meaningless description. In my case I was charged double the normal fee, TA tried to argue that it was a convenience charge since I booked 2 days before. Well, this is where I hope TA consults with their legal team since charging a convenience charge for a NPS tour may be illegal, please see the below. Overall, I was much more successful making these points with the Viatour Customer service as TA didn't care they over charged me and tried to justify it. Kudos to the NPS who does run the tour well. ======================================================================== Legality of Charging More for a California NPS Tour Based on Convenience Under current California and National Park Service (NPS) rules, you generally cannot legally charge more for a California NPS‑operated tour simply because it is more convenient — especially if the extra cost is not tied to a verifiable, incremental cost. 1. California surcharge rules (effective Jan. 1, 2026) California’s amended Consumer Legal Remedies Act (Section 1748.1‑B, California Civil Code) now limits surcharges to the actual incremental cost plus a 5% administrative margin. A “convenience” fee that has no direct cost to the NPS (e.g., just to make the tour easier for you) would not qualify as a legitimate surcharge. If the fee is not itemized separately with a plain‑language explanation of its purpose, it could be considered deceptive pricing under SB 478’s “Honest Pricing Law”. 2. NPS concession and CUA rules The NPS Concession Rate Administration Program requires that rates for concessioner‑provided facilities and services be fair to concessioners, reasonable to visitors, and set in accordance with law and policy. Commercial use authorizations (CUAs) for tour operators must cover only the costs of administration and management, and any fees must be justified by law and policy National Park Service. The NPS does not have authority to impose arbitrary convenience‑based surcharges on its own‑operated tours. 3. What is allowed Cost‑based surcharges: If the extra convenience truly adds measurable cost (e.g., extra fuel, labor, or equipment), and the fee is within the 5% margin limit, it may be allowed. For NPS‑operated tours, the base price is set by the NPS; operators cannot unilaterally raise it without NPS approval 4. What is not allowed Arbitrary “convenience” fees without a verifiable cost. “Price‑inflation” surcharges that raise the base price of regulated goods/services. Deceptive pricing that misleads consumers about the total cost Bottom line: If the “convenience” charge is not tied to a real, incremental cost and exceeds the allowed margin, it is not legal under California law. For NPS‑operated tours, the NPS sets the rates; you cannot legally add convenience‑based surcharges without NPS approval. To be compliant, any extra charge must be cost‑justified, itemized, and within legal limits.
