The worst safari ever experienced in 53 years
I had to use a voucher from a previous booking which unfortunately I had had to cancel for my health condition, and which had not been refunded to me (in fact they had only been able to give me a voucher). I chose a safari based on the destination list, and I was required to pay a difference compared to my voucher. No one told me it was a camping safari and I found out the first evening we were supposed to camp.I have a brain tumor and never in my life would I have booked a tour like this in my health condition. I wasn't even asked if I had any allergies or special dietary needs, and on the first evening of camping they fed me grilled meat (which is unheard of everywhere in the world) covered with a pepper-based sauce, camping in the dark I didn't realize it and the next day I had a stomach ache all day and I vomited. The vehicle used for the tour is a sort of pickup truck converted into a minibus, the passenger seats are very high compared to the road and on dirt roads the vibrations are shocking, it even stung the skin, it felt like being in a blender, I felt terrible. I vomited several times and had to take a lot of medicine. Furthermore, the condition of the vehicle was so bad that due to the vibrations a window came off which was then fixed during the tour, wasting time in a workshop. Even the tread on the tires was so worn that we got punctures three times in six days. A used, dirty and smelly sleeping bag was provided to me for a fee ($270N$). The tent was dirty and full of sand. At night the temperatures were close to zero degrees and it was impossible for me to sleep in the tent, so I camped on the minibus, where despite a blanket and a sleeping bag I was still very cold. The next day I protested and they made me speak to the agency manager, who agreed to pay me for two nights in a lodge, I had to pay for another night in a lodge (2110N$), and the last night I had to sleep while still camped out in the minibus. That was the coldest night of the entire tour as we were in the south, and all the tourists who took this tour with me, although they came equipped for camping, complained about the freezing temperatures. To sleep on that last night, Chameleon Safari also bought me a pillow and a light blanket for me, and I had to buy a serious blanket for myself in a lodge, but despite everything I was still very cold. I almost never ate what they cooked in the field kitchen because for me it was inedible food and I always had to buy sandwiches at my own expense. I appreciate that Chameleon Safari tried to help me for the trip by paying for some facilities out of their own pocket, but in any case it was the worst safari experience I've had in 53 years. Finally, during the third day of the safari we plan to visit the Damara Tribes: something terrifying! They take you to see fake indigenous villages where in reality no one lives, and where you are shown tortured minors (15 year old girls) (who have had four healthy teeth removed from their lower jaw) who are displayed naked. A truly shameful thing with the sole purpose of making tourists pity and extorting money! The underage girls displayed naked and mutilated to the tourists called the guide "mom"!
Response from the operator: Dear Sarah, Thank you for the review, we at Chameleon Safaris value all feedback as this is how we learn and grow. Chameleon Safaris is a budget friendly tour operator. We try to put together packages that make travel to Namibia possible to all walks of life. You have rebooked with us the same safaris as you have booked in 2021 and all the information was shared with you. It is the responsibility of the traveller to ensure that you read and understand what safari you have booked, this way all the unhappiness can be avoided. Best of luck for your future travels. Amazing Namibia
Our 9-day safari through Namibia was an incredible experience, offering an unforgettable journey of some of Namibia’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife. We were amazed by the different landscapes and beauty of the country and the friendliness of its people. Etosha National Park was remarkable, the wildlife viewing was one of the highlights of the trip, we had the opportunity to see many animals including elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions and more. Watching the sunrise over the dunes was also a great experience and the starry sky over Namibia at night offered a spectacular view of the Milky Way. The lodges we stayed in were comfortable and welcoming, with nice staff and facilities. The combination of camping and lodge stays was well balanced. The campsites were well equipped and the camping equipment provided was of high quality. The whole trip was exceptionally well organised, from the pick up at the airport to the return to Windhoek. Our guides Gideon, Erasto and Kennedy were great. They were not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the wildlife and landscapes and made sure everything ran smoothly. They also prepared delicious meals for us and their friendliness made the journey even more enjoyable. We experienced the incredible diversity of Namibia first hand and can highly recommend this trip to anyone wishing to explore this country. We left Namibia with a deep appreciation for the diverse landscapes, incredible wildlife and people and will certainly return.
Response from the operator: Dear Ingrid, wow, what an amazing review and experience you had with us. Namibia is truly an amazing country and our guides are wonderful people who do absolutely love to share their country with our guests. Perhaps we will see you back one day, safe travels Jackie

9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Windhoek.
How much does 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari cost?
+
Prices start at $3074 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Windhoek usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari take?
+
Plan for about 216 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Windhoek is not rushed.
Is 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 28 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Windhoek, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 216-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari?
+
Around 10 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Windhoek can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Windhoek and add a light layer if any part of the 216-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does 9 Day Canyons, Dunes & Wildlife Camping and Lodge Safari start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Windhoek within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Windhoek?
+
On Outty we rank every Windhoek experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Windhoek City Tour, Windhoek Historical City Tour Plus Township Tour !, Half-Day Windhoek City and Township Cultural Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Windhoek?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Windhoek?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
