The tour also covers the War of Independence when Michael Collins battled for Irish freedom from 1919-21 and also includes a discussion on the Irish Civil War, 1922-23. The tour is highly educational but also great fun and very interactive. Prior knowledge of events is not required.

What you'll see and do
1916 Rebellion Walking Tour
This is our starting point, the famous International Bar where Lorcan Collins has been running the 1916 Tour since 1996. You are welcome to come earlier and enjoy a drink and a read of the introductory literature supplied by your guide. The tour begins with a short introduction to the build up to the revolutionary period, starting with the Great Hunger / Irish Famine of the 1840's and culminating with the 1916 Rising. This gives all participants an understanding of the events leading up to the revolution and also gives everyone a chance to ask questions and get to know the guide. We will let you know what route we are going to take, below are some of the examples of places that we typically visit but we vary the route so that the tour does not become stale but you will be happy with the various places that you get to see.

City Hall
City Hall was occupied during the 1916 Rising by the Irish Citizen Army so we will stop here and talk about that aspect of Easter Week 1916.

We will visit Dublin Castle where the British administration controlled Ireland from. We will discuss it's role in the 1916 Rising and War of Independence. You might recall Dublin Castle from the Michael Collins movie.

Four Courts
The Four Courts was occupied by the revolutionaries in 1916 and again in the build up to the Irish Civil War in 1922. Rather than go all the way up to the building it is best seen from a bridge over the River Liffey. Here there will be a discussion on the Four Courts role in 1916 and 1922 and the intricacies of the Civil War will be explained.

There are lots of little stops along the walk but we will also stop at Daniel O'Connell's Memorial to look at the bullet holes from the Rising and explain the positions occupied by the British and the Irish in 1916.

Jim Larkin Statue
Big Jim Larkin the Union Man from Liverpool was a great comrade of James Connolly and a true friend to the Dublin working class. We'll stop at his statue and explain his contribution to the revolutionary period.

An Post General Post Office
The GPO was the HQ for the Revolutionaries in Dublin and is one of our most important stops where an explanation of the events of Easter 1916 will unfold. This is the place where PH Pearse read the Proclamation and is an integral part of the Irish national psyche - the most important and historic building in Dublin.

I knew only the bare...
I knew only the bare outlines of the Easter Rising before the tour. Tom’s vivid presentation brought the past to life. He provided the necessary background to understand what led up to the Rising and then focused on the roles played by dozens of individuals. Tom is a gifted storyteller as well as a knowledgeable historian. It was a great experience, I highly recommend to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Irish history prior to independence.

Today was my second time doing the tour, I’ve done it once before with Lorcan and today it was with Tom and I have to say both are fantastic. I loved Toms attention to detail on the individual people of the time, it really painted a new image in my head I hadn’t had before when thinking of the rising in all my years of learning and reading about it, and I genuinely came away having learned a lot of new information. I couldn’t recommend the tour enough as someone born and raised in Dublin. The lads are a credit to the city.

An outstanding tour, highly recommended!
Lorcan was absolutely fascinating from start to finish. He caught the students' attention right from the beginning and held it throughout, thanks to his impressive knowledge, his storytelling, and, of course, his humour. Rather than simply reciting facts, he brought the history to life with vivid anecdotes and well-timed jokes that kept everyone engaged, even those who usually find guided tours a bit of a stretch. We received a comprehensive overview of the key historical events, but what made the tour special were the many tiny details he wove in along the way: the little-known facts and curious side stories that you would never find in a guidebook and that made the places truly memorable. He was also incredibly approachable and fun to be with. He welcomed questions, answered them with patience and enthusiasm, and created a relaxed atmosphere in which the students felt comfortable joining in. Thank you for such a memorable experience. We will gladly book again!

Tom was an incredible storyteller, he really made the Easter rising come to life, I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who has an interest in the history of Ireland.

1916 Rebellion - excellent walking tour!
Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable and was an engaging tour guide and storyteller. In addition to telling about the background and events of the rebellion, he described the personalities involved and the huge stakes against this group of Irish patriots. It rained on and off during the tour, and Tom tried to ensure we could be under covered areas so as not to get too wet. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning about the 1916 Easter Rising and its place in Irish history.
