Eleven Days, and Still Not Ready to Leave
We picked the longer Kerala trip because we wanted enough time to actually enjoy the places rather than spend the whole holiday checking out of one hotel and rushing into the next. What I didn’t expect was how often the mood of the trip would change. The hill days felt almost like a separate holiday. Cool mornings, long drives through green country and those moments when the clouds suddenly opened up enough to show the view. Then the scenery gradually became denser and more tropical, and the whole journey started feeling completely different again. One afternoon we stopped somewhere simple for tea and snacks and ended up staying much longer than planned. Nothing special was happening, but everyone was relaxed and nobody was looking at the time. Weirdly, that became one of the moments we still talk about. The backwater section was another reset. I thought the houseboat would mainly be something to photograph, but once we were actually out on the water, we barely cared about taking pictures. We just sat around watching other boats, houses along the banks and people going about their normal day. Later, having some coastal time was exactly what we needed. After so many different landscapes and road journeys, walking around in the evening with nowhere urgent to be felt brilliant. The private car also made more difference than I expected over eleven days. There was no daily discussion about taxis, luggage or connections. Great Experience!
Eleven Days That Never Felt Repetitive What surprised me most about this trip was how different Kerala felt from one part of the route to the next. The first few days had us surrounded by hills, cooler air and huge stretches of green. Later the scenery became more forested and rural, and then suddenly we were travelling through backwater country where everything seemed to move at half the speed. One of my favourite memories was actually a very ordinary evening. We had finished the day's travelling, found somewhere local to eat and spent the rest of the time talking about everything we had already seen. There was no sightseeing plan left for the day, and that made it even better. The houseboat experience was another highlight. I expected it to be quite touristy, but once we were moving through the quieter waterways it felt completely different. Watching homes, boats and everyday life along the banks was something I could have done for hours. The beach days later in the trip were well timed too. After several days of moving around, having time to walk, eat slowly and do absolutely nothing for a while was very welcome. Our driver deserves credit as well. Eleven days together is a long time, but he was consistently polite, punctual and easy to travel with. He never made our spontaneous stops feel inconvenient. A Longer Kerala Journey That Never Felt Repetitive
We chose the 11-day Kerala itinerary because we wanted enough time to see different parts of the state without changing hotels every single night. Looking at the route beforehand, I wasn't sure whether eleven days would feel too long, but it actually worked very well. Munnar was probably the biggest change from what we are used to at home. The cooler air, tea-covered slopes and winding mountain roads made the first part of the trip feel completely different. From there, Thekkady brought forests and spice plantations, and we enjoyed having time to explore rather than rushing through. The backwaters were another highlight. Spending a night on the houseboat was much more enjoyable than I expected. After several days of sightseeing, it was nice to have an evening where there wasn't much to do except eat, sit outside and watch the scenery slowly pass by. What I particularly liked about having eleven days was the variety later in the trip. Varkala, Kollam and Kumarakom each had their own atmosphere, so the journey never became a repetition of the same sightseeing. Troper Tours also kept the practical side simple.
