a handloom weaving tour in Varanasi was easily the highlight of my trip. It gave me a deep appreciation for the world-famous Banarasi silk sarees and fine scarves that make this city globally renowned. The most captivating part was seeing the master artisans at work. Long before the loom even moves, artists meticulously draw the entire pattern map by hand on graph paper (naksha). This intricate artwork is then translated into punch cards—a brilliant traditional technique where thousands of perforated cards guide the loom to create elaborate gold and silver zari motifs. Best $21 spent of my life.
We had an amazing experience and truly enjoyed learning about this wonderful art form. The tour lasted around two hours, and my wife and I attended as a couple. We were so impressed by the craftsmanship that we ended up buying a beautiful stole as a souvenir. Faiz was an excellent host. He was knowledgeable, welcoming, and made everyone feel comfortable asking questions throughout the experience. At $21 per person, the tour was absolutely worth the price. We were also fortunate that the group was very small—just four people, including the two of us—which made the experience even more personal and engaging. The atmosphere inside the workshop was fascinating, with the rhythmic sounds of the handlooms creating an authentic and immersive environment. Everyone we met was warm, friendly, and happy to share their skills. We highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in traditional craftsmanship and local culture
