About this experience
Today you will enjoy an adventurous full-day safari at Wilpattu National Park including breakfast and lunch at the Park. Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka. Wilpattu National Park is well worth as a standalone attraction as it records the second-highest leopard density in Sri Lanka, after Yala. It also admits a fewer number of visitors, which sets it in stark contrast to Yala National Park, which tends to get overcrowded. These reasons alone make Wilpattu National Park a perfect alternative for proper safari-goers who prefer to see magnificent wild animals in their natural habitat while avoiding annoying crowds.

Not worth it
The Sri Lankan government have a nature reserve and not game park attitude to safari experiences. Huge queues of cars to enter the park, limited access - roads open to the public heaving with safari jeeps. You have to start queuing at the park gate at 4:30 am to be one of the first jeeps in the park at 6 am if you have any chance of seeing any wildlife when it crosses one of the few roads briefly. The Sri Lankan park authority do not allow radio contact so the guides cannot coordinate when there is a rare sighting either. The park is predominantly wooded so if you are lucky you may spot one of their big three early in the morning crossing a road. For safari lovers don’t bother. You will see beautiful landscapes and very few animals. Safari’s in Africa are on another league both in terms of organization, hospitality and above all wildlife you can see during a 2-3 day trip.

A date with nature’s beauty
There are lots of parks in Sri Lanka, Wilpattu came up as one that people said was less busy and very peaceful. I choice to do a full day Safari it was an early 4am start as I was coming from Negombo but the driver was really good and we got there in 2hrs. It was a long day but the time flew. I got to see a lone male elephant that was having fun in the water, 5 water buffalos, family of deers, amazing different birds and some new animals too! Not to mention the beautiful landscapes in the park. I had a home cooked Sri Lankan lunch by a lake and watch butterflies all around me it was really magical. All day we tried to see the famous leopards, a few other jeeps that day said they had seen them but many said they haven’t. On our way back to the entrance we stopped by a water pond as there had been a baby crocodile in there in the morning, the next minute the driver said I think there is a leopard up in the bush! It had been sitting there watching us by the time I got my phone out to take a picture it was running away a 4 second view lol 😂 but the guide got a picture of it watching us. So you really never know what’s lurking 👀 in the jungle. As I was traveling on my own the day trip was expensive but I had the opportunity jeep to myself and the driver asked me what things I wanted to see. It was a different experience and it was wonderful to be with nature so if you want a relaxed day watching nature take this tour. We should remember the park is the animals home so we can’t expect them to just show up because we want to see them. Go to the park with the view to explore nature and you won’t be disappointed. Seeing the Leopards and the other big animals is a bonus. Thank you Abeyrathne for getting the final picture of the day you can see it was watching us 🥰

Amazing Wilpattu Safari – Highly Recommended!
We had an incredible experience on our Wilpattu safari from Negombo. Our guide was exceptional – knowledgeable, friendly, and really made the wildlife experience come alive. The day was long, starting with a 4 AM hotel pickup and returning around 7 PM, but it was absolutely worth it. The drive from Negombo to Wilpattu took over 3 hours, and our driver was excellent – safe, smooth, and very accommodating. The highlight? Spotting not one, but two leopards in the wild! The park itself is stunning and less crowded than other national parks, which made the experience feel truly special. If you’re considering a safari from Negombo, this is the one to do. Incredible wildlife, a fantastic guide, and a memorable adventure from start to finish.

Leopards trails
We stayed 2 nights at the Leopards trails, a very upmarket camp site about a mile outside the entrance to Wilpattu National Park. The accomodation, food and the staff service were all excellent. Unfortunately we didn't see any leopards but we saw four bears , including a mother and her cub, amongst other wild life.

Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive): questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kandy.
How much does Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive) cost?
+
Prices start at $152 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kandy usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive) take?
+
Plan for about 10 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kandy is not rushed.
Is Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive) worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 80 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 120 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kandy, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive)?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive) suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive)?
+
Around 42 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kandy can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kandy and add a light layer if any part of the 10-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Wilpattu National Park Jeep Safari from Negombo / Waikkal (All Inclusive) start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kandy within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Kandy?
+
On Outty we rank every Kandy experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Explore Kandy City Tour by Tuk Tuk, Tours and Transportation in Sri Lanka, Chauffeur guide and Tour organizer. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Kandy?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Kandy?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
