    Amazing Elephant Gathering at Minneriya

We went for the afternoon safari 3-6pm and it was incredible. Saw over 60 elephants gathered around the tank - this is the famous "Gathering". Besides elephants we saw deer, peacocks, crocodiles and tons of birds. Our jeep driver was very knowledgeable and found us the best spots. Park is clean and well managed. Much less crowded than Yala. Bring water, hat and binoculars. This is a must-do if you’re in Habarana/Sigiriya area. 100% recommend.

    Don’t Go!

We arranged for an afternoon at Minneriya during our stay in central Sri Lanka. Please do not make the mistakes we made. We arrived at the park entrance at 14:30 in the boiling heat. We met our guide and his dusty jeep. There was no shade and there were another 50 jeeps in the car park. We spent two hours smelling the other jeep’s exhaust as we all raced across the arid landscape one after another breathing in fumes and dust in order to reach the lake area to see the elephants trying to cool down. There were at least 20 elephants surrounded by 50 jeeps each trying to maneuver around each other to get a view of the elephants. Worse than a motorway leaving a city during a holiday period. If you are a safari - nature lover don’t bother. Sri Lanka is not the place for safari’s. The temples and archeological sites are much more beautiful and memorable. Safari’s in Tanzania and Botswana are on another league.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your experience, and we are genuinely sorry that the safari did not meet your expectations. August is normally one of the busiest periods at Minneriya, as many visitors come specifically to see the elephant gathering. Because of this, some congestion inside the park is unfortunately common during this time of year. On the day of your visit, there was also an unexpected delay in obtaining the park entrance tickets. This was due to issues with the government ticketing system rather than something within our control. We understand, however, that this contributed to your experience, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. The good news is that these system issues have now been resolved. We also understand that a safari experience can be very different from the quieter wildlife experiences available in Tanzania or Botswana. Our intention is always to provide our guests with the best possible experience while respecting the wildlife and park environment. If we made any mistake or fell short of the service you expected, we are truly sorry. Thank you for your honest feedback—it helps us improve our service for future guests. 🙏

    Recommended!

Tharu is very knowledgeable about the elephants. He is also a careful and skilled driver. We can truely recommend him. This company arranged the entrance fee for us, so we could jump the long queu of cars and get into the park faster.

    So many elephants

A wonderful nature experience. Our guide, Kumara kept good positions to observe the groups of elephants. However the entrance fee of the National Park is not cheap, it’s worth visiting. We had a great day.

    Elephant Safari in Minneriya

The safari was excellent with good stops seeing different elephant groups and other animals. The driver was flexible to our requests for stops and photos and drove safely in a good quality jeep. They kept us informed all the way from booking to return home with photos of the vehicle to meet, driver name and confirmation of return straight to our hotel. Park tickets were booked in advance so we avoided long queues at the entrance.

    +

How long does Private Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park to Visit Elephants take?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 85 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 307 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Sigiriya, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park to Visit Elephants?

    +

Around 107 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sigiriya can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sigiriya and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Sigiriya?

    +

On Outty we rank every Sigiriya experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sajee’s Place Cooking Class sigiriya, Private Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park to Visit Elephants, 7 Days Tour in Sri Lanka with 4 Star HB Accommodations. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Sigiriya?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Sigiriya?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
